Apple plans to release a new "Concierge" application for the iPhone and iPod touch that will allow customers to schedule appointments at retail stores according to AppleInsider.

According to the source that has proven reliable in the past, the App Store software will allow anyone to view memberships and make appointments for services at retail stores, like the Genius Bar or One to One. No release date or the alleged application was provided.

The information on the potential new iPhone application was corroborated Monday in a separate report from MacRumors.

Customers can currently schedule appointments and make ProCare reservations via Apple's retail Web site. In addition to One to One and the Genius Bar, reservations can be made for personal shopping, workshops, youth programs and businesses. The description would suggest that the App Store software would simply be an extension of these capabilities.

In recent weeks, Apple has been expanding the relationship between its Web site and its retail outlets. Earlier this month, the Cupertino, Calif., company unveiled a holiday shopping in-store pickup option. The system will allow customers the ability to ensure products will be available for them to purchase before the holidays. Reserve and Pick Up allows customers to reserve an iPod or Mac online and pick it up at the nearest retail store between Dec. 15 and 24.

Apple has big plans for its retail stores in the coming year. Ron Johnson, the company's senior vice president of Retail, said last week that 50 new locations will debut in 2010.

Apple will also go bigger, as Johnson said officials realized that some of their stores were too small. All future locations, he said, will be at least "three tables wide," and the Mac maker also plans to have more "significant stores" that attract attention. The company's famous glass cube store on Fifth Ave. in New York City was said this year to be the most profitable store in the pricey district. It is estimated that the store has annual sales of more than $350 million.
I want to be a force for good. Doesn't everyone?
Which is why I was delighted to be moved by the words of Microsoft's Bill Gates during a CNBC TV special in which he and Warren Buffett discussed the meaning of life. Or something similar.
Asked by an audience member what he thought of Steve Jobs and Apple, Gates began with an insouciant smile.
Then he tossed garlands of roses and pearls of praise at the Apple co-founder.

He said: "He's done a fantastic job."
Which was charming in itself. But he continued to describe how Jobs saved Apple: "He brought in a team, he brought in inspiration about great products and design that's made Apple back into being an incredible force in doing good things."
So, from now on, everyone who happens to be a fanperson of either brand should seek out one of his or her supposed mortal enemies, hold hands with them and see if, together, they cannot try to be a force for good things too.

Well, well. Apple's won its copyright infringement claim against would-be Mac cloner Psystar in California. Anyone surprised? As we've been saying all along, the key argument wasn't the OS X EULA or Psystar's failed monopoly claims, but pure, simple copyright infringement, since Psystar was illegally copying, modifying, and distributing Apple's code. Psystar was also dinged for circumventing Apple's kernel encryption in violation of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, but that's just another nail in the coffin, really. There's still some legal fireworks to come, as Apple's various other claims like breach of contract, trademark infringement, and unfair competition weren't addressed in this ruling, but those are all secondary issues now -- and we'd expect this decision to have quite an impact on the other case currently ongoing in Florida. We've broken down the highlights after the break, hit up the read link for the PDF and follow along.

Element is a lock screen mod that began as a Concept and has turned into the real thing. Since it began as a concept back in September, there hasn’t been much to tell, but it seems that that one and only Jay Freeman (better known as saurik) is helping to make this thing happen. So, it’s time to get the information rolling. According to a recent tweet (see below), a beta of the lock screen mod will hit Cydia next week.
Firewall iP allows you to block outgoing connections (TCP & UDP). It hooks into applications from AppStore and Cydia. Firewall iP will alert you if the app wants to establish a connection to a host and shows you the hostname. Then you have the options to allow/deny the connection once/always or allow/deny all connections for the application.

You can decide if the application will send data. Developers will no longer be able to collect stats about you (UDID, phone number, usage statistics…) or even collect personal data. With Firewall iP you can cover all app analytic providers which aren’t in PrivaCy and also custom analytics.

You can block some content too. Now you are the one who decides!

In the control app you can edit the rules for each 3rd party application as well as add new applications to the list. It also offers a switch to disable Firewall iP and a SBSettingsToggle for the same purpose.

Cydia itself is excluded for obvious reasons.
Quote from the dev team

Today we released an ultrasn0w update that fixes an issue for those running firmware 3.1.2 with the 04.26 baseband. That specific combination resulted in a missing carrier name in the upper left-hand corner of your home screen. Today’s ultrasn0w update from 0.91 to 0.92 fixes that problem (which was an important issue for roaming). You should see the update available if you have ultrasn0w.com as a Cydia source. Enjoy!

ultrasn0w 0.92 Carrier Logo Fix for Unlock iPhone 3.1.2 Firmware

The iPhone Dev-Team has finally released a proper working patch which fixes carrier name or logo on unlocked iPhone 3.1.2 firmware. If you...

The iPhone Dev-Team has finally released a proper working patch which fixes carrier name or logo on unlocked iPhone 3.1.2 firmware. If you jailbreaked your iPhone with PwnageTool 3.1.4 and then later unlocked it with ultrasn0w, then you must have noticed that the carrier name or logo on the top left side of the status bar was missing. This was caused due to a known bug in ultrasn0w and was purely cosmetic, which means that your phone continued to work even without the carrier logo in place. But today, Dev-Team has released ultrasn0w 0.92 which fixes this issue. Follow the steps below to upgrade your phone to the latest version of ultrasn0w.

Note: ultrasn0w 0.92 can unlock iPhone 3G and 3GS only with Modem Firmware (Baseband) version 04.26.08, unlike blackra1n with blacksn0w which can unlock the latest Modem Firmware (Baseband) 05.11.07.

Step 1: Start “Cydia” on your iPhone and touch on “Manage” tab on the bottom. Now touch on “Sources”

Note: T-Mobile users should disable 3G before installing ultrasn0w.

Step 2: Touch on “Edit” and then on “Add”. You will be prompted to enter a url source.Add musclenerd's repo and touch on “Add Source”.
Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.

Step 3: Once the repository has been added successfully, Search for “ultrasn0w” in Cydia and install this application. The latest version 0.92 of this app will automatically unlock your iPhone so that you can use it with any carrier with proper carrier name/logo.

Those of you who already have the older version of ultrasn0w installed should simply touch on “Modify” button on the top right, followed by “Upgrade” button

Step 4: Now simply restart your iPhone and you should now have a fully unlocked iPhone on firmware 3.1.2 with proper name or logo for your carrier!

ultrasn0w 0.92 will be later moved to repo666 . Search for it on repo666 if you cant find it in musclenerd’s repo.

Apple to Manufacture Verizon-Compatible iPhone in Q3 2010?

A new report from OTR Global relayed by AppleInsider indicates that Apple is planning on manufacturing new hybrid iPhones that will support both Verizon's CDMA2000 network as well as the UMTS 3G network. Only the UMTS network is supported by the current version of the iPhone and is used by AT&T and much of the rest of the world.
Qualcomm's new hybrid CDMA/WCDMA chip offers the potential for a single, global iPhone that users can take to any major carrier, solving the network fractionalization problem. It also solves other issues that had served as roadblocks, including the issue of user confusion that would result from Apple selling separate CDMA and GSM/UMTS versions of the iPhone.

The reason behind building in such support would seem primarily to extend the iPhone's compatibility with Verizon in the U.S. The move is expected to take place by the 3rd quarter of 2010. Conveniently, AT&T's exclusivity contract with Apple is believed to expire in mid 2010.

The report also indicates the new model's screen will also shrink in size from 3.5" to 2.8" diagonally. Curiously, this is not the first time the possibility of a 2.8" iPhone has emerged with iLounge previously publishing photos of 2.8" screens that were believed to be for use in future Apple devices.

Just as a new hack, blacksn0w, promises to unlock iPhones with the latest Apple software from AT&T's wireless network, Apple is looking for a sheriff to lock the smartphones back up again, permanently.

A job posting on Apple corporate Web site seeks a security manager for the iPhone platform to lead a team focused on secure booting and installation of the operating system, cryptographic services, partitioning and hardening its internal security domains, and risk analysis of security threats.
The "liberation movement" for iPhone poses special issues for enterprises that are adopting the iPhone in unprecedented numbers, despite the fact that Apple provides virtually no security or management infrastructure for the popular device. With jailbroken phones, enterprise users could load applications that might, even unintentionally, threaten corporate data or back-end Exchange servers, for example. Unlocking the phone from AT&T's authorized network makes it hard to track, monitor and optimize wireless costs and could open the enterprise to legal problems.

It's not clear from the online job post whether this is a brand new position or Apple is seeking a replacement for an existing, or former, employee.
