Yet Another Tablet Rumor: Late and Wildly Expensive?

According to a report in DigiTimes...

According to a report in DigiTimes, which covers the Taiwanese semiconductor, electronics, computer and communications supply industry, Apple's long-rumored tablet will not be released until the second half of last year. The report also asserts the tablet will come in two models: one with a 10.6-inch display for about $800 - $1000 US and one with a 9.7-inch OLED panel for an almost-unimaginable $2,000 US.

DigiTimes has had a spotty track record on Apple rumors to date, having reported such clunkers as the assertion that all iPods would have cameras in the last refresh of the product line. However, they've had their share of wins, so it's worth at least listening to what their China electronics-industry anonymous tattletales have to say.

According to the report, Apple changed the launch from March in order to “switch some components” and to add a model with a 9.7″ OLED screen. The OLED model will be manufactured with a display from LG Electronics, as part of a $500 million US contract with Apple. The estimates of retail price for the phones is in line with the high cost of these displays, which DigiTimes estimates would push the amount Apple will have to pay for each super-tablet to $1,500 - $1,700 US per unit.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster (who has a much higher success rate than DigiTimes, it should be noted) isn't buying it. In a report to investors reported by AppleInsider, he's sticking with his stated position that the tablet will arrive in the first quarter of 2010, and continues to state that the right price point is between $500 and $700 US. This would mean the tablet would still come at a premium as compared to netbooks, but he insists that it's a reasonable target for Apple to hit:

As a point of perspective, iSuppli has reported the bill of materials on the iPhone 3GS is $179. Backing out the phone functionality, we believe the bill of materials is about $160. Assuming the tablet is 3x the size of the iPod touch implies a bill of materials for the tablet of around $480.

Munster has repeatedly asserted that the tablet will be, essentially a large iPod touch that will run a version of the iPhone OS rather than Mac OS X. The device, he says, will run both iPhone apps and a "new category of larger apps."

Attention Hits Hack in 10.6.2 Enabling Atom Support

Even though some discovered this information weeks ago, only now is it widely coming to light as high-traffic news and rumor sources like 9to5Mac are finally promoting word that Atom support can be enabled by a hack in 10.6.2. And while this news doesn't come as a major shock to anyone, it is somewhat surprising how quickly a fix has come along to effectively "work around" the decision by Apple to drop support for Atom processors in OS X 10.6.2 - a move that effectively killed Hackintosh netbooks.

Quote:

A Russian hacker was able to slap an old Atom-supporting OSX Kernel on the newer Mac OS 10.6.2 build and get it running on his little Atom netbook. Depending on how much Apple cares, we'll probably see this shut down in 10.6.3. Rinse. Repeat.

The Russian hacker behind this development (named “Tea”) is responsible for making a patched kernel tailored for the Atom CPU. Fairly straightforward and simple, copying this to the root level of your drive and rebooting should then restore everything back to the way it was in 10.6.1.

If you can't read Russian, it's important to note that "Tea" didn't personally give this kernel a whirl on 10.6.2. Some other intrepid souls, however, did follow "Tea's" recommendations. And according to most known reports, everything went according to plan and worked as "Tea" had anticipated.

Yep, we knew this would happen. Apple, for whatever reason (they didn't test it and don't care or they are trying to prevent Hackintosh) killed support for Atom in their latest 10.6.2 build.

While this news is a welcome gem of information to many, it's certainly a frustrating reality for Apple - but not for the reason most would immediately suspect. Rather than thinking Apple merely wants to impede the Hackintosh movement wherever possible, it's far more likely that Apple hopes to prevent copy-cat troublemakers like Psystar from pulling their usual stunts and casually ringing the register on the intellectual property that rightfully belongs in Cupertino.

An article on 9to5mac yesterday has a lot of people talking today, as the prospect of a new Mac attack from phishers allegedly looms on the horizon. Although Macs have a mostly pristine imagine for being resistant to virus attacks, phishers are slowly and steadily taking aim at Apple products.

Quote:

We received word this morning of what could be a brand new phishing attack that’s in circulation at present - an email which purports to relate to a recent Apple retail transaction and asks for details of any recent orders. The email (image above) also carries a stuffed file. This contains an ‘exe’ file which will only launch on a Windows machine, as with all such phishing trips, be advised not to click on any attachments from sources you don’t know/trust.

I can personally confirm from my own sources that there is, in fact, an email in circulation that, like reported, reads: “We recorded a payment request from ‘Apple Inc.’ to enable the charge of $7,548.45 on your account.” As you can imagine, those who click on the attachment to "stop the transaction" open up a world of hurt for their OS.

This news, while unfortunate, serves as a healthy reminder for us all that Macs and iPhones are not impervious to phishing and the harsh consequences that result from its successful inroads. According to the same report from 9to5mac, a survey of 1,003 people commissioned by security firm ESET "found that most cybercrime losses are caused by phishing attacks, and users are equally at risk to these attempts, whatever the OS."

This story is the second major security threat reported this week that affects Mac or iPhone users. On Tuesday, it was determined by "experts" that sensitive personal information (names, passwords, etc) can be harvested from an iPhone via WiFi connection. As a result, iPhone users are being warned to avoid accessing password-protected sites on a public WiFi network. Seems like common sense, but this "bad news" is yet another telling reminder to help keep our guard up.

Analysts discuss the Apple Tablet Features

Following news that Apple has been touting its rumoured tablet around media outlets, in order to encourage them to adopt the platform, it has now emerged that Apple has been showing the new device to analysts.

ITIC analyst Laura DiDio has claimed that the Apple tablet will come in several different models featuring a 10-12in screen, it will offering a variety of internet connections from Wi-Fi to 3G, and will offer a webcam for video conferencing.

She told CNN:

Quote:

"The tablet will change the game, because Apple will throw down the gauntlet at the competitors, and force them to follow along."

Senior CNET editor Dan Ackerman concurred with DiDio's assessment.

Quote:

"Apple will come out with the tablet and blow everyone away," said Ackerman. "Instead of taking along a Kindle and an iPod, that [tablet] could become the device you carry with you."

In October, the Sydney Morning Herald revealed that Apple has sent specifications of the device to the companies in an effort to sound out whether they would be interested in delivering their content to the tablet.

That report claimed however:

Quote:

"The tablet is tipped to be a larger version of the iPhone. It is small enough to carry in a handbag but too big to fit in a pocket. It will have a touch screen and be targeted at users who mainly want to surf the web, read books and newspapers or watch movies."

In addition New York Times' Executive Editor, Bill Keller spoke of an Apple slate in a speech to staff last month.

During the speech, Keller made a reference to the Times' strategy for mobile devices.

Quote:

"We need to figure out the right journalistic product to deliver to mobile platforms and devices,""I'm hoping we can get the newsroom more actively involved in the challenge of delivering our best journalism in the form of Times Reader, iPhone apps, WAP, or the impending Apple slate, or whatever comes after that."

However, David Wertheimer, executive director of the University of Southern California's Entertainment Technology Center, admitted that he found it hard to "comprehend" how the tablet would replace all other mobile tech products.

Quote:

"But then again, what I can't imagine, Steve Jobs often can. The tablet will be awesome, and my guess is that it will be an instant hit for people who loved Kindles and people who want netbooks," opined Wertheimer.

In addition, a patent has recently emerged for what could be described as an Apple Tablet. Apple has filed a patent with the US Patent & Trademark office for a computer system where data is entered via a pen-based input. The accompanying images certainly hint that this is the outline for the eagerly anticipated Apple Tablet.

Apple isn't letting any grass grow beneath them in terms of future operating system upgrades.

While most of us are still acclimating to Snow Leopard, Mac Rumors is reporting information today that could soon have us preparing to familiarize ourselves with yet another new version OS X.

Quote:

Evidence has surfaced that Apple is already working on the next version of OS X, presumably to be designated Mac OS X 10.7. The information comes from an entry posted earlier today in a database of changes to the open source "launched" framework, which oversees booting of Mac OS X and administers processes running on the system.

The "smoking-gun" giveaway is the error message discovered in the entry. The text string reads "11A47," which, of course, is a reference to the Mac OS X build number being used. Apple should have known someone would eventually catch on, as the company has a bad habit of using “a numerical prefix indicating the major release version, followed by a letter code indicating the minor release version and a numerical suffix indicating iterations of that version throughout its development.”

Particularly exciting to some, the '47' suffix indicates that Apple is up to something, though there is no way of telling how long it will be until the upcoming OS refresh will be formally unveiled. But when it does finally arrive, grand expectations await - particularly since the last OS upgrade didn't pack a big enough "wow" factor for a lot of Apple fans.

Thanks to the arrival of Windows 7, Apple has to stretch beyond basic security and stability issues with their next operating system. Being "radical" on the user interface could prove the company's only effective way to stand out and differentiate from the competition.

As the holiday shopping season shifts into full gear, companies are systematically unveiling their post-Thanksgiving "Black Friday" sales opportunities. And if a new "leak" reported by Boy Genius is accurate, Apple will be joining the discount party by offering some fairly impressive deals on a host of products.

According to the leaked flier (which is believed to be accurate) posted on ZDNET, it appears Apple is planning the following Black Friday discounts:

up to 15% off all accessories as well as Apple software and hardware.

But according to the same report on ZDNET, if you snooze, you lose. If legit and really in the works, there won't be much time to capitalize on the deal.

Relative to discounts from 2008, Apple has upped its efforts to kick off a robust holiday shopping season. Last year on Black Friday, Apple discounted $101 off the 2GHz unibody MacBook. They also took off $51 from the 20-inch iMac, $11 from the 8GB iPod Nano and $21 from 160GB Apple TV.

Although your guess is as good as mine as to whether these suspected deals will ultimately manifest, I think its safe to assume that they will. In addition to Apple looking to clear some of its inventory before new products are introduced, possibly as early as January, Apple may still be worried about a tentative economy in a fragile holiday shopping season.

Unlike others rumors consistently floating around Apple, we won't have to wait much longer to see if these reported discounts ultimately prove to be for real.

After months of the tech press and blogosphere spreading every type of rumor about the still-unconfirmed Apple tablet, CNN has gotten into the action. Referring to it as "a magazine-sized, touch-screen, hand-held, all-in-one device that is half-iPhone, half-Macintosh computer," CNNMoney.com highlighted the device in a post today. They talked to a panel of experts who basically recapped the rumors to date, with one significant new speculation: "stunning graphics," better than the iPod or iPhone, and a webcam for videoconferencing.

The story -subheadlined "the everything killer" - made much of how the tablet was being positioned to replace many different handheld devices now in use. According to the analysts surveyed: Laura DiDio, principal analyst at ITIC; David Wertheimer, executive director of the University of Southern California's Entertainment Technology Center; and Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with Yankee Group, the device is being prepared to fill the gap between the iPhone/iPod touch and a low-end Mac Book. The idea that the device will "kill" single-function devices like the Amazon Kindle by offering books, Web browsing, gaming, entertainment and on-the-go computing in a single package was touted by DiDio and Wertheimer, though Kerravala sounded a note of caution.

"What we've found in the past with these multi-function devices is that they're better for ad-hoc purposes, like quick and dirty tasks," said Zeus Kerravala, an analyst with Yankee Group. "They're not for any prolonged, high-performance use."

For instance, smartphones have cameras for quick snapshots, but when you go on vacation, you're probably going to want your digital camera to come along with you for high-quality photos.

Kerravala said the same logic applies to the tablet's other functions, including its e-reading capability: "If you want to sit and read a book, the ergonomics of a device that's specifically designed for reading are going to be better."

Walt Mossberg at the Wall Street Journal, however, recently added his voice to the chorus of those who believe the tablet will be a true general-purpose computer. The influential pundit responded to a written question from a reader to the Journal's AllThingsDigital site by saying that he hadn't "seen any evidence" that Apple was planning a single-purpose device, noting that the iPhone and iPod touch can run Kindle software.

As to the price of the still-unannounced device, speculation ran from as low as $600 to as high as $1000 - but DiDio noted that Apple had an early fail in pricing the iPhone at $599, far above the competitive price for the smartphones that existed at that time. The implication was that Apple would move to price the tablet to compete with similar products currently on the market, such as netbooks, which are generally priced much lower.
Psystar's ongoing legal battle...

Psystar's ongoing legal battle against Apple may have been struck a mortal wound on Saturday with a ruling from the U.S. District Court. Judge William Alsup of the Northern District of California ruled that Psystar infringed Apple's copyright to the Mac OS X operating system, and violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act by modifying the OS to run on non-Apple hardware.

Rudy and Robert Pedraza went into business selling Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware. The Miami brothers won themselves notoriety by not only countersuing Apple after being sued by them for copyright infringement but also claiming that the hackintosh community doesn't know what they're doing. The company has tried every trick in the book - and many that are not - to keep their case alive, including releasing its own bootloader and filing bankruptcy (which didn't work).

The defeat came after both companies had requested summary judgment, which, essentially, asks the judge for a flat up or down ruling and asserts that enough evidence has been produced to make or break the case. The judge not only found in Apple's favor, but said that Psystar had improperly pled its case.

One of the key matters at issue was the argument made by Psystar that buying a copy of Mac OS X software makes you the owner of that software with the right to sell it so long as no additional copies are made. Apple's copyright agreement makes the person who pays for the software a licensee, not an owner, of the software, and so Apple's restrictions on how the software may be used still apply.

Interestingly, a copyright expert who was cited by Psystar in its argument saw this approach (in a case defending a user who had resold Autodesk software on eBay) as an attack not only on copyright, but also on the whole idea of free and open source software (FOSS), which relies on agreements restricting how copies can be made.

Quote:

Indeed, while a ruling that a delivery of a copy of software is a sale of the copy would seriously injure the software industry, it would also eviscerate open-source software which, for many companies, involves delivery of copies subject to restrictions that allow its redistribution only under stated conditions.

The open-source-oriented legal site Groklaw agreed with this take on the Psystar lawsuit, seeing it as "an attack on the GPL [the GNU Public License under which much open-source software such as Linux is provided] and on FOSS, using Apple as a smokescreen… hoping that the FOSS community wouldn't see what was happening until it was too late."

While this is an enormous blow to Psystar's case, still more issues remain to be decided such as breach of contract and trademark infringement. A hearing is scheduled for December 14 on those matters.
MacRumors is reporting this morning that Intel is moving forward with launching their Arrandale mobile CPUs in early January. These particular Arrandale CPUs are based on the "advanced Nehalem architecture" first introduced into Macs just this year.

It was a spectacle to behold.

The grand opening of Apple's "biggest, baddest" new retail store surprised even some of Apple's most frequent critics. On Saturday morning in Manhattan's Upper West Side, the official unveiling of New York's newest Apple store was, to put it mildly, an "event."

Located at 1981 Broadway, the grandiose, cube-like building with spectacular glass staircases officially offers the single largest physical presentation of Apple products anywhere in the world.

Indeed, it's a showy store for sure, as confirmed by a review from Notebooks.com:

The grandeur and scope of Manhattan’s fourth Apple store may seem strange to some. Likewise for Apple’s new “significant stores” strategy, with it’s emphasis on flashy stores in major markets. In a time where many consumers are turning away from brick-and-mortar stores, and many companies are cutting costs, Apple appears to be moving in the opposite direction.

Apple's new store is more than just an offering of products and services. It is also billed as a destination. This weekend, in fact, the store boasts a series of "Apple Adventures" for the whole family. Tomorrow's Youth Day, for example, will allow younger visitors to the Apple Store to create songs, movies, photo albums, and a host of digital presentations on location in one of the coolest environments conducive to technology and good old-fashioned creativity.

Last month, Microsoft Corp opened its first retail store in Arizona. But good luck catching up. Apple currently operates a network of 280 retail stores in 10 countries with an additional 40 to 50 retail stores planned for next year. But before anyone looks to the future, thousands of Apple fans are first planning to visit the 8,500 square foot new store in Manhattan for an "experience" rather than a shopping excursion.

Apple Planning for Pen Aware Tablet?

Image: http://modmyi.com/images/Messany/Apple-pen-aware-tablet.jpg

Our friends at UnwiredView.com...

Our friends at UnwiredView.com have uncovered a new patent application from - you guessed it - Apple. Although patent applications are nothing to ostensibly get excited about in theory, it's a different story altogether when a patent application suggests that the mythical Apple tablet may actually be on the horizon.

According to further coverage by MacRumors, everyone seems to be interpreting this find as evidence that efforts are being made to prepare the way for improved digital ink recognition techniques for a yet-to-be announced but forthcoming pen-aware tablet.

Quote:

While the patent application, which was filed on July 19th, 2009, is broadly written to apply to computers in general with pen-based input-only "tablets", the inventors also make reference to tablets with integrated display screens for both input and output, such as the company's much-rumored tablet device.

This time, it appears the answer may be yes, particularly since the patent primarily contends with a very general effort to improve digital ink recognition - something that applies to a broad range of products, not merely a tablet project that may
or may not really be in the works. For the most part, the patent in question chiefly relates to what's called an "ink manager" - the ability for this creation to better recognize what it is that you are scribbling across the screen.

Quote:

Apple has placed a great deal of emphasis on its multi-touch technology used in the iPhone and iPod touch as a differentiator from what it has perceived as inferior stylus-based input methods. But the patent application published today indicates that the company has not completely abandoned such technologies and is in fact seeking to continue improving their functionality.

Hailing from my neck of the woods in the great state of Indiana is IU professor Larry Yaeger, the patent application's "lead inventor" and an ex-Apple employee who has already contributed greatly to handwriting recognition software and other technologies used in a variety of Apple products.

Although it's easy to be let down upon realization that this patent application probably has little to do with an Apple tablet, we're simultaneously failing to realize how much cooler the Apple products we already own will become as the company continues to improve and expand upon a broad expanse of technologies and innovations.

No matter which way you slice it, a patent application from Apple is a very good thing - whether it has anything to do with
a tablet or not.

Microsoft's partner group manager was interviewed by PCR...

Microsoft's partner group manager was interviewed by PCR, a trade publication for computer resellers, and blurted that the company had tried to "create a Mac look and feel" with the Windows 7 operating system. A member of the Windows team quickly struck back on the team's blog, calling the remark "inaccurate and uninformed."

Aldous is in charge of the unit that deals with the company's resellers, which is highly significant to Microsoft as the software behemoth does not directly retail any of its products. In an interview mainly consisting of policy issues having to do with the relationship of Microsoft to the people that put the company's product on their shelves, Aldous made the following assertion.

Quote:

One of the things that people say an awful lot about the Apple Mac is that the OS is fantastic, that it’s very graphical and easy to use. What we’ve tried to do with Windows 7 – whether it’s traditional format or in a touch format – is create a Mac look and feel in terms of graphics

Aldous rallied, though, returning to the party line about Windows 7's virtues. "We've significantly improved the graphical user interface, but it's built on that very stable core Vista technology, which is far more stable than the current Mac platform," Aldous said.

The smackdown arrived late yesterday. "Unfortunately, this came from a Microsoft employee who was not involved in any aspect of designing Windows 7," said Brandon LeBlanc, a company spokesman who authors most of the Windows 7 blog posts. "I hate to say this about one of our own, but his comments were inaccurate and uninformed."

Observers have noted look-and-feel similarities between Windows 7's revamped task bar and the Mac OS X dock. Computerworld highlighted some strengths of the taskbar in its "OS Deathmatch," saying that it is better at displaying thumbnails of an application's open windows. Computerworld did, however, give the win to Mac OS X, asserting that "no one beats Apple when it comes to design."

GeoHot has declared the blacksn0w/blackra1n WiFi bug "closed," saying that after his investigation he believes it to be a problem with the iPhone firmware itself, rather than his work. On Twitter today, he made a statement suggesting he could fix the bug for $10,000. Most observers, though, are interpreting this as a tongue-in-cheek offer coming as it does in the wake of his smackdown of Jody Sanders' offer of $10,000 for the 3.1.2 baseband unlock.
The issue has manifested as a complete inability to connect, even from very close to the WiFi access point, to intermittent or permanent disconnects.
Before updating, Wifi worked flawlessly; at times even better than my macbook’s.
After the updating, my iPhone does not discover my networks anymore. I have made it recognize my home network, however, by getting closer to the router. But since distance has never been a problem, it definitely shouldn’t be now.

As many users noted the issue after upgrading to 3.1.2 and subsequently unlocking and/or jailbreaking their iPhones, there was a concern that the hacks themselves could have introduced a problem. After seeing the volume of complaints from users of stock iPhones, however, Hotz concluded that his hack was not at fault.

Though workarounds from resetting network settings, to enabling/disabling Airplane mode, to putting the iPhone in the freezer for a minute (thus voiding the warranty) have been suggested by the user community, there is as yet no official fix from Apple for this issue... other than returning your phone to an Apple Store for replacement.

Six months after the owner of a large self-storage facility near a busy interstate interchange in Boston paid a $110,000 settlement to keep an illegal 13,750-square-foot billboard on his building, the sign has mysteriously disappeared. The property owner, the city, and Apple have all refused comment on the matter.

Two years ago, the owner of Planet Storage put a massive banner - mounted on scaffolding obscuring a mural of whales - on the side of his building, which is clearly visible from Interstate 93 as it enters Boston's downtown. The commonwealth of Massachusetts objected, saying the sign was illegal because it did not advertise products sold in the store. The owner said it should be allowed since he sold iTunes cards in the facility, and the businessman who put the sign up (who has also donated up to the legal limit to five-term Boston Mayor Thomas Menino every year since 2005) obtained a one-year temporary permit for the sign, but did not renew it in 2008.

The issue became a controversy in October after it was revealed one of the Mayor's campaign aides had made a call to the city office that needed to okay the permit. In an interview with the Boston Herald, David A. Passafaro, longtime friend of Mayor Menino, acknowledged that his inquiry might have been considered an official approval of the sign.

Quote:

“Yeah, I suppose,’’ Passafaro said. “I could see that someone might think that I was asking for something, and I was not.’’

Last week, Tom Menino won an unprecedented fifth consecutive four-year term, and the sign came down. There is no indication whether the two events are connected: spokespeople for the city's Inspectional Services Department and the Boston Redevelopment Authority were contacted by the Boston Herald and said they had no explanation for its removal. The building owner, the businessman who put together the sign deal and Apple, Inc. all could not be reached for comment.

Several weeks ago, we revisited the complaint from many Snow Leopard users that their files would be deleted from the home directory after logging into a guest account. At the time, Apple said it was looking into the matter and would have a proposed fix in the near future.

Tonight, the future has arrived, as Apple has unveiled its latest Snow Leopard update - a security patch that aims to fix a plethora of issues while simultaneously enhancing the general performance of the operating system.

According to InformationWeek, the Mac OS X 10.6.2 update addresses many of the security vulnerabilities that occur in open source components of Mac OS X, like Apache or Subversion.

Quote:

The 10.6.2 update resolves a bug that could lead to the deletion of files in a user's home directory following a Guest account login. It also repairs an unexpected logout issue, a problem with Spotlight search that prevented Exchange contacts from being seen, and numerous other stability and usability issues, as explained on Apple's Web site.

As already widely reported, the update disables support for X.509 certificates with MD2 encryption "for uses other than trusted root certificates." InformationWeek explains that this move was prompted by a weakness in the MD2 hash algorithm.

According to the Apple update summary, the update also targets login bypass vulnerability:

Quote:

"If an account on the system has no password, such as the Guest account, a user may log in to any account without supplying a password. This update addresses the issue through improved access checks."

The 473-megabyte update, however, does NOT run on the Intel Atom processor, a further sign that Apple is serious about
cracking down on those dreaded "Hackintoshes" or netbooks utilizing the infamous Atom chip to illegally run OS X.

The update, which addresses some forty security vulnerabilities, is now available for download from Apple's website or via Apple's Software Update preference panel.

Apple TV users enjoying the recently released Apple TV 3.0 update are being advised by Apple to install the latest update, if they haven't done so already.

Although the release was out days ago, the company is concerned that not enough users are aware of it or taking quick advantage of its availability. Multiple news outlets and blogs today are covering Apple's push to get everyone to revisit the last update.

According to MacWorld:

Apple TV 3.0 users (like myself) have been bugged by this problem for a while now. Seemingly without provocation, digital content magically disappears from the device. I can report, however, that the 3.0.1 update solved the problem for me. And if it's a problem for you, the update should similarly make the issue go away.
A new patent application revealed this week shows future Apple plans for an online service...

A new patent application revealed this week shows future Apple plans for an online service that would allow users to sync multiple devices - such as Macs, iPhones, and Apple TVs - making not just files but also live application states portable and accessible wherever they go. The patent may give new clues to the purpose of the massive $1 billion data center Apple is building in North Carolina.

The filing with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, dated September 30, 2008, was revealed in a story on AppleInsider today. It describes a system that lets a user sync both personal files and live projects in their applications, so that one could literally pick up where one left off, moving from home computer to iPhone to work computer. The described system could share, for example, content like Safari bookmarks, iTunes content, Time Machine backups, Keynote presentations, or even video game file saves.

The application describes the intent of Apple's service as being to simplify the decision-making process of what to sync and how:

Quote:

Though a user may have access to two similarly capable electronic devices, sharing data between the two devices may involve a number of steps, each of which may vary in difficulty. The process of transferring data between the devices may include many user decisions, such as which data to save, where the data is saved, which formats each device may be capable of processing, how to interconnect the devices for a most effective data transfer, etc. Such complexity may increase the difficulty or time spent transferring data between two electronic devices.

The service described in the patent would be available both locally - using wireless communication between an iPhone and a Mac or between two iPhones - or globally, using Internet-based "cloud" services to transfer data between two devices that are in different locations. The system would dynamically choose the fastest available connection, making such determinations as whether to connect over the Internet or whether to encrypt the data transfer. The system might also require a that you be within a certain distance from the target device when syncing, and would maintain the "trusted" devices with which syncing is permitted.

The patent is for the service itself and also for the software that would enable easy and intuitive access. The application describes an iPhone app called "Grab & Go." The app would have user-configurable preferences that would sort user application content and files by type, such as "family," "business," "entertainment," "gaming media," "education," "accounting," etc.

Earlier this year, Apple broke ground on what has been described as a "big-*** data center:” a 500,000 square-foot server farm in Malden, North Carolina. Observers have noted that this facility will be one of the largest data centers in the world, and presaged a major push by Apple into the "cloud computing" space.

It's clear that Apple's future direction is creating a fabric in which all a person's computing devices - computers, smartphones, netbooks/tablets - could be integrated seamlessly. Obviously, they intend that all these devices should have an Apple logo on them, but if this move is successful, it would be taking cloud computing to the next level by allowing everyday users to truly go location-independent.
