Unlocked Iphone 3G 2.2, bought in Apple store with Vodacom prepaid sim, could use my own MTN-sim instead, no probs. Pwned it to use... South Africa. Unlocked Iphone 3G 2.2, bought in Apple store with Vodacom prepaid sim, could use my own MTN-sim instead, no probs. Pwned it to use some Cydia apps.
Today, tried upgrading to OS 3.1.2 with latest Pwntool, resulted in 'no carrier'. Tried several times, with same results.
Then, made different ipsw with 'activate' box unchecked (some post read that if you have no carrier this is likely why..), resulted in: only emergency calls available. in DFU mode Itunes thinks Iphone is an Ipod XD, so I can't load old 2.2 custom anymore.
How can I revrse out of this situation. My phone has been jailbroken for a couple months now.. and every time I plug in my phone to my computer, I get a popup saying:
"An update to the carrier settings for your iPhone is available. Would you like to install it now?"

This is on the iPhone 3G and my current carrier setting is AT&T 5.5 and I believe this is asking me to update to 5.6. I've searched around and cant seem to find a definite answer to whether or not updating the carrier setting will ruin my jailbreak and tethering abilities.

Anyone have any experiences?

First off I downloaded pwnagetool and tried to jailbreak that way which either gives 1600 or 1604 errors when installing the custom ipsw.

So having read more it looked like lots of people were having this problem and the solution was to put the iPhone into DFU then use ireb to get past the errors.
I can get the phone into DFU, have installed ireb, but when i select the 3G in ireb is doesnt turn my screen white and doesn't crash ireb (which it is supposed to) so I can't progress...

I've tried all of this on my mac and on my PC and no joy.

My iPhone is new 3GS, 3.1.2, 16GB on O2 UK.
