Default newbie can't install new Cydia app

I'm trying to install the Cydia app BTstack keyboard so I can use a portable keyboard with my iPhone 2G. Under CydiaStore I scroll down and see BTstack keyboard $5 and select it. I quickly get an error box: "Note: Cannot Locate Package"

The Cydia fine print below the error msg suggests how to fix this. First suggestion it to install more sources. I tried that but get the same error msg as above.

Second is: Go to Changes and hit Refresh. If I do that it flashes a few brief errors at the top (database something) but then goes on FOREVER (I quit at 15 mins) saying Downloading ... but never completes.

The third/last thing in fine print says that I may need to be more up-to-date with Apple firmware. My PC's iTunes (v9) Sync interface is offering me 3.1.3 but out of fear of messing up I'm still back at 3.0.

So I'm basically lost and looking for suggestions what to try next for getting BTstack kbd PLUS generally if I need to update my firmware or Cydia or what? I'm heading out on a 3 week trip soon (thus the keyboard need) so if possible I'd like to just get BTstack working now and maybe do riskier/more complex upgrades after the trip.

    SOME BACKGROUND ...
I'm pretty new to the whole iPhone jailbreak world so I may ask a dumb question. I read the Jailbreak 101 post but it's all pretty fuzzy still.

One year ago I bought a used iPhone 2G (8 Gig) running iOS 3.0 and already unlocked and jailbroken by the seller and included Cydia and Icy. I slipped in my AT&T SIM and Voila! it has worked great for me since.

The seller warned: When iTunes offers to upgrade the OS always say NO else it would break the unlock/jailbreak - so I've left it as is for the past year.

I've installed a couple dozen apps both from both App Store and Cydia's store. Some stuff I recall adding are BigBoss, etc.

I haven't opened Cydia in many months. When I went look for BTstack and opened Cydia and it would just close after showing Loading for 10-20 seconds. I Googled this problem and found a blog suggesting to clear the Cydia cache (?) or such. I tried to SSH but couldn't log in. I installed iPhoneBrowser on my Win7 PC and was able to follow the blog to remove all files in /var/lib/apts/list. Did that I then I could open Cydia.

Tiny print at the bottom of Cydia home screen says ...
"iPhone 2G, iOS 3.0, Cydia 1.0.3044-65" then a huge string ... if that helps.

This brings me to the point of installing BTstack kbd and the error msg I opened this (too) long post with.

    Thanks for listening!

Got a reply elsewhere. Thanks for looking anyhow.

I was advised to upgrade my iPhone 2G firmware from the old 3.0 to the current 3.1.3 and re-jailbreak it using redsn0w.

Aha! My first personal jailbreaking adventure is about to begin!
