Error: Refreshing Data
After updating Cydia to 1.0.3032-64, I got the following error.
Method http has died unexpectedly!
Method /usr/lib/apt/methods/http did not start correctly
(Repeated at least 3 times in the error message window)
Would you please tell me how to fix it? Thank you!

I had the same problem (2.2.1 3G). I think the fault is in Mobile Substrate. I patched the /Applications/Cydia.app/Cydia bash script to not start Cydia with "--substrate", and Cydia works fine now. You can do it via DiskAid (copy the file off and back) if SSH or Mobile Terminal aren't your cup of tea.
Failing that, you need to remove Mobile Substrate by hand with DiskAid (/Library/MobileSubstrate/MobileSubstrate.dylib), or with "dpkg -r" or "apt-get remove" (SSH or MobileTerminal).
Is there a way to force Mobile Substrate into Safe Mode? That would disable it and make removing it more straightforward.
It's in SBSettings, via the Power button. Get into Safe Mode, then Cydia will work and you can remove Mobile Substrate the normal way, or update it if Saurik gets a fix out soon.

I tried the Safe Mode way, but no luck, Cydia acted exactly the same as in normal mode.
There's something I forgot to mention in my first post. If I don't touch "Okay" in the error message window within about 0.5 second, I won't be able to close Cydia by Home button. However, I can Respring by using SBSettings.

I had the same problem with the same configuration. I removed Winterboard and both the "http method" error and "dpkg" error were gone when i refreshed Cydia or removed any installed packages.
It's too bad since I depend on Winterboard for themes.
Winterboard 0.9.2993-1
Mobile Substrate 09.3043-1
Cydia Installer 1.0.3044-65

Glad to know it work for you.
After I searched extensively via Google and other related forums, I realized that there are very few others experiencing the same problem. Not sure if the demand is large enough for the developers to react quickly.
I wonder if the upgrading order (Winterboard, Cydia Installer, Mobile Substrate) has anything to do with this.
I also had the same problem with an iPhone 2G running on FW2.2.1. Perhaps, it is just FW2.2.1?
Here's a solution to get Winterboard working again:
I just rolled back to Mobile Substrate 0.9.3005-1 (the previous version before all the errors) via AutoInstall. I SSHed using Fugu and copied in the mobilesubstrate_0.9.3005-1_iphoneos-arm.deb to /root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall/. Make sure you set permissions to 0755. Then reboot and dance (optional).
And now the combination of all three below works like a charm.
Winterboard 0.9.2993-1
Mobile Substrate 09.3005-1
Cydia Installer 1.0.3044-65
Good Luck!Last edited by spook75; 09-19-2009 at 02:08 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I am having the same problem, I think, cydia opens fine and I can download whatever I want. However, the stupid packages will not refresh so I cannot get the newest packages to display on the changes section. I tried deleting big boss repo and a few others and then reinstalling them to no avail. I heard that big boss was down for a while so I don't know if that had something to do with it. Anyways any help would be appreciated.
p.s. iphone 2g running 3.0

Had the same problem. Iphone 3G Firmware 2.2.
After updating Winterboard, Cydia Installer, Mobile Substrate in one role cydia always showed the "Method /usr/lib/apt/methods/http did not start correctly" error.
The simple solution spook75 already posted is just roll back to Mobile Substrate 0.9.3005-1. That's all.

If the locations do not exist, then create the folders yourself. Create Cydia inside of the root/Media folder, then create AutoInstall inside of the Cydia folder. Right click on each folder and ensure the permissions are set to 0755.
BTW - a huge thanks to spook75. This is something I've been wrestling with since the day I grabbed that updated mobilesubstrate. Hats off to you, bud!

I'd thought you'd puzzle it out from there, but no one has linked where to get the older mobilesubstrate.
Grab the version mentioned above, here...
Index of /debs/
Put the correct file in your newly created AutoInstall folder, then reboot your gizmo. Let us know what happens after that - success! or something else...

You're welcome!
It seems like the last compatible version of Mobile Substrate for FW2.2.1 is Mobile Substrate 09.3005-1. Even the last update (Mobile Substrate 09.3051-1) spawned "dpkg" errors after updating.
I had to revert back to the trusty ole Mobile Substrate 09.3005-1 version.
All is good now.Last edited by spook75; 10-13-2009 at 10:02 AM. Reason: typo

Thanks for the heads up re: the latest version. I was going to give that a shot - just in case.
I'll happily continue using 2.2.1 until all the 3.x issues are sorted. My gizmo is working just fine...

Mobile substrate rollback
I had the same problem with cydia on an iphone 2g with v2.2.1. I rolled back to .09.3005-1 as listed above and problem seems to be solved. Thanks for the info.

Many thanks. It worked pretty fine on a iTouch 1G FW 2.2.1.
I just had to create that new dir /root/Media/Cydia/AutoInstall/ to put the older version of mobile substract. Thanks again!
