re-install cydia - FATAL -> Failed to fork

Ok, I've been a bit frustrated with cydia recently, I can't remember when it started but cydia would NOT update automatically from the sources every time I started it. I had to click "refresh" in the "changes" tab and it would crash. After "few" times it would eventually update and I was able to see the changes.

I think it's a memory issue, maybe!? Who knows, anyway only today I realize that if that is it.

So tonight I wanted to get this fixed once and for all:

- I go start cydia and this time it wouldn't even stay up and running, nope, it would just crash during the infamous "update"
- so I decide to use apt-get to see if I get some new essential upgrade that would affect cydia or repositories, 3 upgrades to be installed, none of them was pertinent (just 3 regulat upgrades for apps I've installed, so I keep going, I want to get to the bottom of this
- I run apt-get update from the shell on my phone, and that crashed even my console session, so I cannot see the error message if one
- I decide then to run it connecting via SSH (so at least, I am thinking, I can see the error), well now during the update I get a bunch of them, here they are listed:

99% [47 Packages gzip 0] [45 Packages bzip2 65536] [Connecting to apt.bigboss.us.com] [Connecting to www.iacces.com] [Connecting toFATAL -> Failed to fork.
W: GPG error: http://cydia.ifoneguide.nl ./ Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 8CB0FE34A99404CB iFoneguide (iFoneguide Repository)
W: GPG error: http://hackthatifone.com ./ Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY D3D6151812F8A7DA
W: GPG error: http://apt.namedfork.net ./ Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 0C11ABBED2C023E5
E: Method gzip has died unexpectedly!

ok, this is the final errors when eventually the update completes, eventually it would end earlier with a "FAILED TO FORK", so I would try again and hoping to get to the end.
OK so now here comes "Google" in my help, I search for all of these quotes, I see lots of forums, nothing helps. So I decide to do what was found on a port: remove and re-install cydia.

So now I did so and I cannot install cydia anymorem I've rebooted the phone already, several times, but still nothing.
Here's my output:

iPhone:~ root# apt-get install cydia

I would run quickpwn it will load Cydia for you.

Also, looks like the errors you were getting from Cydia we all source (repo) problems....I would have just deleted those repos first to see if that helped.

Isn't quickpwn going to erase everything on it thou?

I had no luck in my previous experience restoring with apt backup or chronus.

actually to reply to your answer, how can I delete the repo if cydia crashes?

Just delete the "sources.list.d" ?? or better yet, everything in it ?

I fixed this without quickpwn.

I ran TOP and I was able to see that my "Apt-get update" was running "many" http processes and they would not close making my device go out of memory.

"Failed to fork" (after I google it) seems to be related to memory shortage or corruption.

SO I went on /private/etc/apt and renamed the old sources.list.d to a *.BAK then I created a new one "sources.list.d" and copied the only repository that would get me cydia back "saurik.list"

now I re-installed cydia and I have to re-install all the repositories, without adding the back ones that would crash my cydia

cydia crash

well today my cydia also decided not to work and keep on crashing after rebooting and rebooting and rebooting.
so i decided to google it but no luck what so ever.
but then some thing hit me so i decided to put my iphone on aeroplane mode then i turned off my wifi at the same time. i then rebooted and try to open cydia again. and guess what still didnt work.
and then some thing else hit me. so i went and open finder and fiddle around with the settings and
finally there i was inside a folder called (etc) the went on to (apt) folder then (sourcelist) folder the deleted every freakin repo list that on there except for saurik list and cydia list.
so i exit, reboot and then open cydia for the last time and walah my cydia is back up and running.

how do you reload cydia without losing everything??? I add zdott or something simular and it crashed and when I hit the cydia icon it just goes to start up then returns to the home screen. I have rebooted it several times and still no luck. Any help would be apreciated.

if I run quickpwn again will it erase all of my apps and mods that I have done already??

I've encountered this type of thing before. For those of you that have installed the "All Sources" package try this:

Delete BigBoss source via OpenSSH

At /private/etc/apt/sources.list.d/
Delete everything, except saurik.list

At /private/var/lib/apt/lists/
Delete the 3 BigBoss related files.

Reboot, start Cydia, hit Manage and Packages. Remove all Repository packages including the 'All Sources' package and leave the Saurik one. I suggest rebooting the phone again after this step.

Start Cydia and install either community sources or BigBoss source. I do not recommend installing the 'All Sources' package as this may have led to the problem in the first place.

Anyway, enjoy and let me know if this helped.

I followed dito's attack sequence here and also copied over cydia.list. Worked perfect.

I'm thinking mine was caused by the touch-mania repo. It was one of the last few I installed and before the fix when I did: 'apt-cache policy cydia', it reported header issues with that repo.

Thanks dito74!

I just downloaded the "All Sources" package from Cydia which supposedly adds all the trusted repositories but now my Cydia takes forever to download packages and shows errors such as host unreachable etc. before finally finishing and now crashes quite frequently. Even worse is that now I have a bunch of Repos that are for foreign languages and they just waste my time scrolling through all of them. I deleted the "All Sources" package under the manage/packages tab but the Repos are still there. In the sources tab I can't delete the Repos either because they are under the installed by packages sections rather than the manually added section. Can I manually delete the Repos I don't want through openSSH?
