Hi, and do cell phone really make you dumber?
Hi everyone, my first post.
OK, a friend said that people get dumber the more they use a cell phone.
I asked him why he thinks that, and he said that people stop remembering phone numbers, or how to do simple math in their head (they use the phone calculator) or write a good letter. Their brains get lazier.
Maybe he has a point, but I don't think so.
Are there any studies on this?
Do you guys think you get dumber the more you use your phone?
I don't, but then again maybe this post proves me wrong ;-)

Those are not very valid points IMO. Memory really doesn't have much to do with intelligence. I get great grades in school but it's not bc I'm good at memorizing things, it's bc I take the time to learn and understand concepts. I actually have a pretty weak memory...but then smartphones have apps. There are apps that have brain games that will help you improve your memory. So wouldn't smartphones have the capacity to make people better at remembering things? There are also apps for education, wouldn't smartphones then be able to help people learn and get smarter? I use apps like visible body to help me learn human anatomy and understand it better.
As for the calculator thing...well calculators have existed long before smartphones have. That fact alone just says it all. I think getting "dumber" is within the user alone. The results vary on how the user uses the device. All technology is that way...how we utilize our technology determines how it affects us.

Even if a nerd lost 100000 IQ points, they'd still be smart.
When ordinary people have access to this kind of technology
the peril of dumbification is grave, indeed.
