iPhone Gaming vs PSP Gaming vs DS Gaming
Just a friendly debate, does anyone actually think an iPhone is better for gaming than a PSP of DS? With my personal experiences, using a touch screen for gaming is definitely not as good as on a psp. I owned a psp but not a ds, although I have played on them before. I have an iPhone 3GS, and have played most of the games that are worthwhile from the appstore, but I believe these just dont stack up to psp games. I feel like psp games are much more in depth and iphone games are more pick-up-for-5min games. Anyway, I saw an article about gamers ditching the PSP and DS for smartphones like the iPhone and thought I would ask here.
BTW if anyone has not seen this yet they should check it out, it would make iPhone gaming better for sure.

More of a chit-chat topic than iphone section. Moved.
I own all gaming systems and you are correct in saying PSP and DS are more in depth than on the on-the-go like iPhone. The iPhone does have some in depth games though.
I like my PSP for several games but it also has minis that you can just pick up for a quick gaming. But people feel having to carry just one device fits them better.
Zenonia is an example of an iPhone game that is pretty in depth and decent.

I have a DS but don't use it anymore since I got my iPhone 4. I like having physical buttons like you said, it is difficult to use touch screen all the time. The reason why I don't play on my DS anymore is b/c the games just are not intriguing anymore. I think if I owned a PSP I would use it all the time over playing games on my iPhone. I use PSX 4 All on my iPhone to play playstation one games (like final fantasy 7-9 so no really difficult button controls with the touch screen). If I had the PSP tho I would probably port the games to it and play on that though haha. But I just got an XBox so I can't afford a PSP now lol.
Overall, portable gaming I'd say the iPhone has great games for times when you're bored and have some free time (like waiting for an appointment or my next class to start). But if I wanted to sit on a 6 hour plane ride, I'd whip out the PSP. but not the DS...Nintendo is not the business for me anymore. Sold my Wii. Still play on my PS2 more than I did the Wii

I think the DS is harder to hold too. Can't play it for longer periods. I got FFVII and my fav FFIX on my PSP. I just love Vivi.

Yeah it seems like the DS wans't very good except for mario and little kids, I've gotta say the Wii was pretty good but got boring fairly quickly. I had a PS2 before I sold it, it was the ****. Now I have an Xbox 360, but probably should have gotten a PS3. I guess i'm a Sony kind of guy. Don't get me wrong, the Xbox is great, but paying $100 plus for Live is BS.
Anyway, the PSP minis I heard never really sold because they were more pricey than app store apps. I'm actually buying a PSP soon after selling it too gamestop for little more than $70 (huge mistake). If anyone else is considering buying one, get one you can install custom firmware on, its essentially like jailbreaking.
One thing I didn't like about the ds is there is no memory slot (that im aware of), I would load my game backups on my memory stick so I didnt have to take all those disks with me, much better.

I love FF 7-9. Favorite in that order lol, 7 is the best, 8 rocks, and 9 is pretty darn good too. Go Cloud, lol. But yeah, DS is so square/rectangular.
I agree Nintendo's line of gaming is getting old. Good for family/friends fun on Wii, but I can only beat people at tennis/bowling for so long lol. I wanted a PS3 but the xbox's kinect is really cool. I was going to buy the PS3 but the moment I tried kinect, it was an immediate change of mind. Plus final fantasy is on both consoles so I don't mind lol.
Back on topic... Chaos Rings on iPhone 4 is awesome. The game is pretty cool and in-depth like the final fantasy line, but not enough. I beat it pretty quick, and it's a bit repetitive. Like I said though, iPhone gaming is great when you've got down time and it is convenient because it's a part of your phone. Angry Birds = kill an hour easy lol. But awesome portable gaming = PSP. I don't even own one but I can tell already that it is superior. Graphics too, much better. The whole street fighter thing on iPhone is difficult because the moves don't always happen since the touch screen is kinda funky with the controls and I end up getting KO'd lol.

Wait till the Video game awards this weekend. Sony may be announcing PSP2. Devs say they have the units already so I am waiting to see. I only get the PSP minis because I have a PSN+ account and get some free.
I have(had) all gaming systems but the xbox hardly gets used. Just recently took the 360 in for trade because nothing that I liked was not multi console except Fable 3 which I plan on getting for the PC soon. Mostly playing on the PS3.
I play games on the iPhone but just not very long.

I heard the PSP2 will be actually released sometime in fall 2010, but Im gonna get a cheap refurbished one to hold me off in the meantime. If the psp2 doesn't seem too impressive, then may be ill keep it. I heard it has a trackpad in the back so u can control your games wihtout your fingers getting in the way. Also, it has been (somewhat) confirmed that dual analogs (finally) and two cameras. No umd drive either

The processor is supposed to have a massive jump also. Way excited myself. My PSP is on my night stand next to my bed. Sometimes I play some FF before sleep or some disgaea.
The vids floating around of the PSP phone just look horrible IMHO.Last edited by Cer0; 12-08-2010 at 10:32 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Yeah they do, plus iPhone is probably way better. Here is a link to the supposed prototype Rumor: PSP2 prototype images leaked | Joystiq keep in mind that Sony allegedly went back to a psp 3000 style console after this was released so they could manage heat problems better. I personally don't like the psp go style as much, but 16gb internal is pretty good.

The Unreal engine for iOS has for sure bumped the iOS game up. New Epic game released.

I own all three, the DS is pretty hard to hold for long periods of time, and most games seem to be aimed towards children or short playing sessions (ironically this is one of the main arguments against the iPhone as a gaming system!) The PSP in my opinion is the best of all three, although there aren't many great games out for the system, playing Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker on the go has taken up over 40 hours of my time. The iPhone is growing as a gaming system, with infinity blade (overlooking the lack of game play and simply looking at graphics) and the unreal engine recently being released, it is guaranteed to grow exponentially soon! In terms of gameplay, Zenonia and Zenonia 2 are probably the two most in depth iPhone games out there, also up there is Dungeon Hunter 2. Spider Man: Total Mayhem certainly rivals other handheld gaming platforms in terms of graphics and gameplay.

I think iPhone is getting better with games, especially on iPhone 4
Maybe I'm just a huge RPG fan but I got that game Eternal Legacy and just started playing and it is pretty good. Hopefully we will see more games with good graphics and in-depth storylines/gameplay. Then maybe my PSP envy will go away

iPhone is better for small games with out a real story, like angry birds. DS' and PSPs are good for games with story lines, like pokemon. Overall, I'd probably say DS or PSP, but games are cheaper on the iPhone and there are many other reasons to have one. So id do

The iPhone can't compete with other hand helds due to the fact that it doesn't have any physical controls. The touch screen limits it to basic functions which aren't always enough for in depth games. The iPad on the other hand can become a huge contender vs other handhelds once iPad gaming starts to take off. I personally enjoy a full keyboard to map functionalities to. The PSP is the closest thing I would call me be comfortable with in the handheld market.
