You also have the right to stick it to "the man" and not buy an iPhone.

Maybe next time you should actually read that agreement before you agree to it! For now it's too late, you can't agree to something and then expect them to change it because you don't like it. Unfortunately, the generation that was coddled as children and taught that everyone owes you has now grown up and the rest of us are stuck with your whiney ways.

I thought it was a law too...
The question is how much of this is AT&T? What does Apple care if you have unlocked your phone? Apple still makes $$ on the phone. The only looser is AT&T who misses out on the service contract.

How is this any different that T-Mobile with the side kick? or Nextel, now Sprint with the Direct connect (for so many years)?
It is not. Many phones come out on just one carrier when first introduced. then after a set period other carriers sell it. Palm TREO did the same thing with many of the treos out there.

Apple cares because they have a contractual agreement with AT&T. There are millions at stake for them both. If apple sits back and lets everyone unlock the phone and go to other carriers, they are negligent and can be held liable by AT&T. It's fairly simple. Apple has no choice but to continue to discourage hacking the phone and must also stop it from happening, if at all possible.
