I didn't debunk it, the laws of physics did.
And the C|Net article, which you outlined as your source originally, you will note, if you read it again... That is says the FBI has made use of a trojan, that must be unknowingly downloaded and opened by the owner of the wireless phone before it can be made to work. Once the trojan is in place, when the owner "thinks" he's turning off his phone, its actually being placed in standby mode where the FBI (or whoever) can hack into it and control it. This doesn't mean the phone is off when they hack into it, this means its standing by, like it usually does when its on, waiting for a signal. Because as has been said so many times, you can't access a phone which is off.
zdnet got their article from C|Net, and Foxnews? credible? That's a joke right?
So don't put the onus on me my boy, it remains with you to provide the "evidence" that a phone can be accessed when the radio is off.Get "iPod & iTunes for Dummies", it'll change your life.

A note on Eurisko comment,
Virus's, etc. can be installed at manufacturing level http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/15/i...nally-thought/ this has brought attention to virus software companies wanting to make apps for phones.
Although if a device is power off ( not standby or sleep )there is no way in hell to power it back up without physically turning it on.
Also, this reminds me of the old TV/FBI rumours, they can use a TV to hear your conversations in a room.........never seen a mic inside a TV yet.

youtube.... Hahaha now that is funny. As most of us already know, including you stubborn folks, this is a very doable hack.
Let me put on the FBI hat for a sec and I'll use the iPhone (Case and Point)....
I need to spy on you... Humm What tools do I have at my disposal
1.) I have the IMEI and Serial# of my intended target
2.) I have access to the iPhone Firmware (I have the resources to decompile and look for holes in the OS.. I am the FBI)
3.) I have software that can tell me when your IMEI or MAC shows up on a wireless network or carrier network.
4.) When your connected to any of the above networks I have access to your phone, don't believe me your Root Password is ALPINE!!
Duhhh..
5.) I can upload all sorts of nifty little patches to the iphone OS (I am the FBI and have access to programming talent that Microsoft could only dream of. Since I get first dibs on MIT grads, and did I mention my budget is bigger then many countries GNP, etc..)
6.) So I upload a patch to you phone via an undocumented programming call or vulnerability in the OS. (Can you say DEV-Team) You can't pull your iPhone bat, makes work easy for me.
7.) I tell your phone, turn on the radio at a predetermined time, activate MIC... I record and prepare my case against you.
Man it's too easy...
Gee, I'll have to wait for the Freedom of Information Act Petition to see if I am correct.
Fun thread...

For what this is worth:
We installed second hand GSM networks in various countries usually an ericcson AE20 switch glued the software on etc trained to local staff an all - and every time the you know who from the various gov agencies appeared and wanted their "back doors" opened and all...every time.....http://modmyi.com/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif
mobile terminal mike's can easily be switched on/off remotely as long as the terminal has the modified software installed on it as long as te device has access to power source....in the UK every halfwitted criminal will not trust a mobile/cell phone unless the batteries are removed. So ha just thought o that one - as fancy as an iphone may be the "professional" criminal will not trust it!

its been proven. it can be done. but how bad of a crime do you have to commit for the fbi to come after you using your phone as a bug? my guess is we are safe from it. if i was that big of a criminal, i just simply wouldnt allow cell phones around me. lucky for me, i am a law abiding citizen, so im not sweatin anything.

Lol if the phone was completely shut off when it's powered down, it wouldn't be able to power back on unless you connect it with a 3rd party
