Yep. Look up QTFairUse. You have to have the rights to listen to the song in iTunes, so you can't just convert it unless you are one of the 5 allowed computers to listed to the audio.

I have burned the m4p's to a disc and then pulled them off the disc as mp3's...but I am not sure if that works anymore

Yep thats how I do it too. But I am sure there is a less cumbersome method.
