Xbox networking question

If I don't want to spend $100 for a wireless adapter for the 360 could I:
a. Get a wifi extender with an Ethernet port on back and just plug that into xbox

b. Get 2 powerstrips that have Ethernet in/out ports and have one plugged into the router downstairs and then the other upstairs plugged into xbox? Thanks

a. A wireless bridge should work fine.

b. Powerbars that have Ethernet ports are for surge protection over Ethernet. They aren't Ethernet-over-power.

c. Can you just run an Ethernet upstairs?

I would have to buy a bunch of Ethernet cable and drill through ceiling/floor and it would just be alot easier and prolly the same cost for wireless bridge. Thanks for the info and yea i wish I would have got a ps3 instead but at the time all my friends had xboxes

Why on earth would you want a PS3? Practically every good game is on the 360.

A. Would create a poor online connection for online gaming. A wireless extender weakens a connection by 50%. Wireless is not recommended for online gaming. Especially modern warfare2 were your ping speed is very important to your performance in game.

B. Is not possible to do like you are thinking. It is a surge protector, thats it.


C. Buy a long enough ethernet / cat5 cable to run to your xbox. Is the only choice you should even consider. It will be the cheapest one out of any of your ideas by far, and will provide the best online gaming experience.

Already got the wireless extender and it has been good so far even for modern warfare, the 100 ft of Ethernet might have been better but it was alot easier to set up rather than drilling through ceiling/floors. We aren't really hardcore gamers that need a super fast connection.

A weak wireless signal isn't necessary going to give you a slow ping. The bandwidth of wireless far exceeds that of most internet connections. And, as a practical example, I have configured a wireless network that sends wireless over 300 feet using a wireless bridge.

When it comes to playing online FPS games. Ping is everything, a wireless extender will slow a ping time dramatically. It will create a larger chance of jitter and fragmentation of the data packets. Which especially in a FPS can be the difference of live or die from one missed packet.

Because the signals that reach them are much weaker, they are more susceptible to interference form outside sources. Devices that rely on a wireless range extender have a longer response time. Their network speed is much lower, causing diminished performance and network lag.

When using an extender, you must weigh the benefit of wireless communication against the drawback of a slower response time. Certain applications, such as those that rely on fast speeds should be physically connected to the network through Ethernet cables.
