Got this messer today from a gentleman named David McFadden. Guess any excuse is better than none. Sorry if I sound upset.

Dear Friends and Family of Ezra Matthews -

Thank you for your email messages regarding Ezra Matthews’ family’s concerns about participating in the Nifurtimox trial. We are sincerely sorry about Ezra’s illness and the change in his health, which seems to have prompted the decision by his Oncologist not to continue Ezra in the study.

As you may be aware, clinical trials are strictly regulated by several federal agencies. The Nifurtimox study was approved with the requirement that specific eligibility criteria be met for all participants enrolled. These criteria were established in order to protect the safety of patients and minimize participant risks while they are participating in the study.

While it is true that many investigational agents can be accessed and administered to patients who have end-stage disease, unfortunately Nifurtimox is not currently available for “Single Patient IND” (Compassionate Use Access), the only path though which a patient who does not meet eligibility criteria could participate in a clinical trial and gain legal access to an investigational drug.

We can understand the rationale that an end-stage patient may not appear to have anything to lose by taking the investigational agent, but we cannot put our research and researchers in legal jeopardy by going outside of the study criteria. The consequences would compromise our entire research program, would inhibit others from participating in research, and could delay treatment for many patients in need.

All of us at the Vermont Cancer Center are deeply sympathetic to the Matthews’ situation. As you probably know many of the physicians who sit on our Protocol Review Committee are cancer care physicians and they are deeply sensitive to the issues related to medication access and the balance of risk and benefit that they are charged to manage. Nevertheless I’m sure you can understand that we are obligated to follow our legal and regulatory responsibilities and cannot offer Nifurtimox outside of the study parameters.

    EDIT:

I just received a response from Robyn stating this.. I am so excited for them! God is working people!

We are getting the drug. Maybe tomorrow.

Update: please watch and pray! They did a wonderful job making this but get ready for many tears.

My God, I will keep the Matthews' family in our (wife and I) family's prayers.

My wife and I have had been through some very trying times with both our children, coming close to losing both our babies. It is through the love and support that we continue to feel His arms wrapped around our children (and us) through the many challenges we have dealt (and continue to) with.

Thanks, I did it a few days ago. Felt that if there ever was a thread that needed a sticky, it would be this one.

I started to cry at the end of the video. I will definitely be keeping them in my prayers.

I saw it said that they were is Orlando. I assume that's Florida, and if so I'm only an hour away from them. This story hits close to home because I've known so many cancer survivors, and I really hope this little guy is one of them.

i came to update, but it looks like you already know they are getting the drug very soon. exciting news!

ezra's heart rate and breathing are much better. although he still isn't talking or even opening his eyes, he is still doing much better. he finished his last round of chemo today. and perhaps the best news of all...
Well, we just signed the papers to dispense the Nifurtimox to Ezra, and he’ll be getting his first dose this evening. Whew – that was a long battle involving chatting with dozens of countries, doctors, FDA, research coordinators, and Bayer, the drug company themselves. Huge props to Dr Sholler in Vermont and Dr Levy in Orlando as well as all their staff in assisting us to make this happen.

I've been following Ezra's battle for a while now, but that video and the other one posted really made me sit back and just realize how blessed I am that my family is healthy at the moment and pray even harder for his recovery. No one deserves something so destructive and I pray that a cure is found to stop this horrible disease from hurting anyone else, especially children...
