Xbox 360 & .MKV playback
I have some videos on my hard drive that are .MKV format. Does the Xbox 360 play them. I'm just wondering if I should have a friend at work convert them while I'm at work. Each video is like 1.1 GB in size so I'd imagine it would take a long time to finish.
I don't know if the newest Xbox update downloaded additional codecs.Android user suffering from iPhone withdraw.

Just change the mkv file extension to avi and you should be good

I can't edit the extension. I'm working with a mac. I press enter on the file and usually it'll let you edit the name but it's not working. If I go to more info the file name and extension are greyed out.

The file is a Read Only file. All the video files are read only. I'll try and plug it into the 360 and hope it recognizes it.

You can't change the file extension, and have the file be recognized. Thiese aren't QuickTime files!

You'll have to convert the files. Even third party media streamers are incompatible with .mkv files. Here's a list of formats the 360 plays: https://support.xbox.com/support/en/...aybackfaq.aspxUntil the next time… And if I help you out, give me a "Thanks!" Thanks!

This sucks. It will probably take a long time to convert all the videos with a compatible converter.

Then youve been lucky because the 360 only plays certain formats with certain codecs

I don't know how that's possible. I'm using the Xbox 360 Premium with the HDMI port. Are you using an Elite? How did you manage to get it to work? When I plugged the HDD into the Xbox it doesn't even pop up on my Xbox Dashboard like it used to before.
The HDD does work because I can plug it into my Mac. I don't have the patience to convert all 18 GB's of video so I guess I'm at a dead end.Android user suffering from iPhone withdraw.

I have it setup so its linked to my pc and I can view all my shared files on the box. I change the file ext on pc and then turn the box on. Go to my videos, then my computers name and the files there and plays perfectly.

I'm pretty sure MKV files work flawlessly, last time I played them I was using Tversity though.

Ok cool. I'll have to borrow my gf's windows laptop and set up media center I'm assuming. I'll try it tonight and see how it works.

I play the files off my Mac too, but the Xbox 360 still won't play .mkv files. Changing the file extension isn't going to do it. Frequently asked questions about video and audio playback for your Xbox 360 console. It's not a case of the file extension that is the issue, but the actual codec itself.
Btw, there are several apps that will stream your videos to your Xbox 360 from your Mac.
1) Rivet: Cynical Peak Software - Rivet
2) Connect360: Nullriver Software : Products : Connect360
3) Playback: Yazsoft | Playback InformationLast edited by Scoops98; 12-04-2009 at 08:12 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

VLC won't even play the files. I'll try that software but I don't think it'll work if I can't even get it to play on my Mac.
