Pigeon beats Internet firm in data transfer race
Bird with card strapped to leg triumphs in 50-mile South African showdown
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - A South African company on Wednesday proved it was faster to transmit data by carrier pigeon than to send it using the country's leading internet service provider.
Local news agency SAPA reported the 11-month-old pigeon, Winston, took one hour and eight minutes to fly the 50 miles from Unlimited IT's offices near Pietermaritzburg to the coastal city of Durban with a data card strapped to its leg.
Including downloading, the transfer took two hours, six minutes and 57 seconds — the time it took for only four percent of the data to be transferred using a line provided by Telkom.Screw #Winning, I'm #Juanning

They were transferring 4gb of data, the story I read said it took four hours over the internet but whatever it was the pigeon still wins. However it's not going to be a very reliable method of transferring data any more, now the story is out I reckon Pigeon season is well and truly in for anyone with a shotgun - bag yourself tea and a memory card full of data - Bargain!

Well if you're transferring 4gb.. yeah that's going to take longer than a pigeon carrying it.
If it was like 1gb it would take much less time.I always feel sorry for the guy in the iPhone commercials. He always gets a call right in the middle of trying to do something

I hear AT&T is locking Pigeons into exclusive contract in Africa.

Speaking of edge and 3g, I have 3g in my entire city, and when I've travelled, I've had edge some places. But sometimes, (rarely) I get a little blue circle next to my bars, and I can't figure out what it is. Anybody know?
