If I upgrade to 02 firmware, will my 02 sim work?

I was just wondering, perhaps the at&t guys know this....
I've unlocked an att phone for use in the uk, and i'm on o2. When the o2 phone is released, and if i choose to upgrade to their firmware, will my existing 02 sim card work. Have at&t users been able to drop a existing at&t sim card in their iphone before/after activation, or does it need to be activated.
If it is activated using ibrickr or independence, will a different at&t sim card work, without unlocking it?
I understand that going on the o2 firmware would lock it, but i can deal with that, if it means dropping my existing sim card without subscribing to another 18 months!
