The great Recession and its affect on MMi viewers
I am sure everyone knows about the recession in the world and the deep mess it has left most countries in. In spite of all the efforts of the various governments it it still getting deeper and much worse.
With this going on in the background I thought i will post the most pertinent question: Who here on MMi has been badly affected and to what extent? Starting with myself: I have lost my job due to redundancy as an architect from one of the biggest consultancy in the world due to the global downturn. Finding another job is becoming almost impossible at this time even though I live and work in a country which had amongst the highest level of construction in the world. So now I am jobless but thankfully I have understanding family and parents who have their own well settled business which I partially take care of.
So anyways who else is in similar sh*t like me cursing the recession for ruining their lives?

Gee lets see, with one son in his first year of college, another to start in the fall, a third to start in 3 years, I saw the college fund go from enough to comfortably pay 4 years of tuition for all 3 down to enough to pay one year for one kid. Currently refinancing the mortgage on the house. That is the bright side- 4.75% fixed rate 30 years I can cash out enough for another year's tuition and retain the same monthly payment. Buying time until the market comes back.

If I've helped you, you can help me by clicking on that Thanks button.

Nothing as bad as what anyone else is going through but the economy has forced me to stay at my job because I fear not finding a new one. I was on the hunt for a consulting position, but I would hate to land a 6 month contract and not find a new engagement afterwards.
Two years ago I had recruiters beating down my door to join their firm, now the market has dried up. Luckily I'm in a good position that's in a relatively 'stable' field so I have less worries than most.

My oldest son is also newly unemployed. Be used to work at Circuit City. Made over $11/hr. He won't find another part time job that will pay as well and with his college expenses that hurts.

^Yeah, I'm in college and my parents are begging me to find any scholarship money I can as I'm doing, however we're not in any real trouble as my mom is in a managerial position at AT&T and my dad is retired, so hopefully we're relatively safe.
Many of our assets are with AT&T stock, though.

My heart is with you guys. I just hope we get out of this recession before things get much worse.
My family, thankfully, hasn't been affected by it, but that doesn't mean we're invulnerable to it. We have to get this economy back on track, that's all I know.

by "land down under" you mean australia? bcos actually i have been trying to get a job there myself for quite some time and the scenario has changes with most architectural firms now closing their doors to recruitment as compared to six months back when recruiters were calling me to come there. Those days my own salary was kickass high and I was living a "glorious" life.
Others: sorry to hear some of the stories and problems - esp. DoerrFan, Napoleon_PhoneApart & bhz1. but overall feeling is that most guys seem quite stable even though vulnerable to the conditions.
