Put CyanogenMod 11 on my Galaxy S3 today, it's amazing how much better and faster an Android phone can be with a custom ROM. Definitely never going back to stock again. I'd have to say it's definitely in the same ballpark as a jailbroken iDevice.

It seemed to me that there aren't many system-wide tweaks for Android beyond themes and keyboards. Is that still the case?

There's actually a lot, you kinda just gotta search for them though. There isn't a big Cydia-like application for this kind of stuff, which is a bit of a disappointment if you've ever used a jailbroken iPhone.

Hmm, Substrate was released for Android right after I got rid of that phone. I wonder if it has enabled or popularized more tweak development somehow.

I don't think much has happened at all regarding that for Android.

I guess I just wasn't doing Android right then. The only tweaks I found were for increasing performance, theming, and changing virtual pixel density.

That's pretty much all there is. And you don't really need to do it for themes. Tons of launchers available for stock android that can handle that well. Only use I can see for rooting is installing custom roms. I don't root them anymore myself, don't feel the need to.

I was pretty disappointed at the lack of customization in custom ROMs. I was happy because that was the only way I could get Jelly Bean, but there really wasn't anything cool beyond the ability to remove bloat.

It seems that iOS 8 will bring customization and inter-app capabilities close to Android, except for themes.

I love it! Instant power and torque! I bet it's fun to mess around on. Although the lack of a nice exhaust note will be very weird.

Fast, low and loud, at least a 180 tire on the rear, 21 inch (or taller) skinny tire on the front. Now that's a Harley.

Yeah, Substrate never really took off. You hardly ever hear about it, honestly. It's almost a complete waste of time for Jay to even maintain it.

I just went to CM because I heard the modding community for Android was decent and I really liked the idea of having 4.4 since 4.3 is so terribly laggy, probably doesn't help that the software peeps at Samsung are terrible at optimizing things.

That's what I like about Android, even of you know what you ate doing it's confusing. I spent enough tine sorting things out. Now I let Apple do it for me.
