No, pretty much banned for everything. Shotgun licenses can be obtained but I don't know many people that have one. I don't mix with the grouse shooting crowd!

It seems so. You've not been murdered, nor has any other American I know so its probably not as bad as I think but to have to carry a gun because you ate worried about crime is not something I recognize. Crime happens in inner cities and to other people, bony something most people even consider here. I don't know anyone that has been the victim of a crime.

See I guess that's a big difference I know people that have been involved in a crime where a gun was necessary or would of been necessary if they had one. Luckily everyone is ok.
No I wouldn't say major crime rates are high here but it does happen.
My mother in-law is a realtor and she does fairly well but she got a deal selling "HUD" homes and most people buying those homes are lower income individuals/family's. The housing usually isn't in the best of places. Any who she carries a gun because she deals with lots of big black men (not trying to sound racist it's just the facts)and sometimes she is down a one way dirt road in the middle if no where for a showing. There was for a while a lot of stories on the news about realtors getting raped and killed at these type of showings and that's why she carries.

The violent crime rate in the US (and UK, and lots of other places) has been trending downwards. In some places, it's at the nadir over a span of decades. Does that mean that I am completely guaranteed not to ever encounter such a life-threatening situation? Just because it's a rare actuality (and I agree, the odds are quite long), doesn't mean that reasonable precautions shouldn't be taken against a very real threat. It's like not buying flood insurance just because you don't have any natural water flowing nearby and nobody else around here has ever been flooded out. It's nave to think that it'll never happen solely because it hasn't happened yet.

    Hot topic here huh?
Even growing up around guns and my dad taking me hunting, teaching me the proper respect and handling of them, I never thought I would be "that person" who would be the one packing a gun. But, in my mind (and many others) it is perhaps a necessary evil we deal with.
It's not like this is the Old West (although it kinda looks like it) it's just a way we have chosen (as a people) to accept our Constitutional Rights.
I will admit, when I moved here (Arizona) almost 14 years ago, it king of freaked me out too.

We don't have a huge crime/murder rate here, much much lower then most large cities in the US. Perhaps this is why.

The difference is that you think it might happen. I know it won't.

I would hate to live somewhere that I thought it was a possibility.

    But that's just me.

Just seen this - you were posting as I was.

You said you carry a gun because you carry money, here that is not an issue. I just find it scary that you feel the need too.

Are you singling me out? Or Americans in general?

Me, I happen to like guns and go to the shooting range or out in the desert and fire them quite often. From AR's, AK's, to an old .45 cal Colt revolver my Dad gave me years ago.

I think me saying I carry because of money was only a small justification. I carry 'cause I choose to.

Knowing that I can protect myself and loved ones if necessary is a comfortable thing for me.

I agree i find it silly that we (Americans) find the need too. But it is the harsh reality there are tons of pro and cons to it. I wish i lived in a place where guns and crime wasn't a problem, but i also wish i was a millionaire lol. Apparently i cant have either at this very moment.
Maybe living in america would change your views on the topic, maybe us living where you live would change ours who knows.
For some its a great peace of mind for others it is overwhelming anxiety. I personally fall in the middle, I don't own one, the people strapped with them don't typically bother me, but i do wish that there was more of a back ground check on people and the license isn't stupid easy to get and a lot of the people getting it don't need to be in possession of a gun in the first place but it is what it is i guess. I think we have all seen someone that doesn't appear mentally stable walking around with one. I am not talking just mentally sick but elderly or kids ( young 20's) who really just dont have the right judgement and know how in my opinion to carry a weapon.

Yup think I am done with this topic back to dandelions and rainbows
