Smell and taste are directly related. Can't really enjoy one without the other. 3 yrs ago I was diagnosed with nasal polyps (soft tissue overgrowth in the sinuses) and have been getting constant sinus infections every week for years now which means I can't smell anything. Directly pointing out the obvious.... I can barely taste anything.
I've noticed smell is what makes you feel like you are "here". touch, sight, all the other essentials just navigate you, but smell is specifically for verifying you are in the moment and making a memory. Try plugging your nose for a few days and walk around doing normal things and you'll notice it is like you weren't even there when you reflect on the last few days. It's like being a ghost I'd reckon. You can touch things and feel them, but without association of smell you can't put it all together, it's like a dream.
You'll notice when you are sick and your nose is plugged up you stay in a haze. It's like you are not even there. Welcome to my life. If you can't breathe you can't sleep.... how many people sleep like a baby when sick with a sinus infection? Due to lack of sleep I get random chest pains from sleep deprivation, which puts me at risk of a heart attack.
You'd never know how screwed up things can get just because you couldn't stop and smell the roses.
