It's not what you know or even who you know. It all boils down to who knows YOU.
If no one knows you then college be a waste of time and money.
Get out there and start meeting people. The person you meet at college today could very well wind up be the person giving you a J-O-B when you get out of college down the road.

I'm leaving for college end of August, but I'm a sophomore so it's nothing new.
I agree, if you are a freshman the best advice to give is to just be yourself and do as much as you can. If they have like freshman orientation or special events that you guys can do, make sure to do it. Everyone is new, and most likely not that many people can with their group of friends so its a great opportunity to meet new people.
And speaking of frats, a lot of frats have open parties for the first couple weeks, if you are interested you should hangout with them as much as possible (we had a school Greek Party where all the Greek organizations are there ready to talk to freshman) not only will you meet new people, maybe friends but if they know you, you're invited to any closed parties they have. In addition, the frat I joined we have over 20 guys (small school) and there are people with the same major as me, but a year or more ahead, so it's nice that they can help me with classes we've both had!
