Okay this thread aint about comparing speeds, there is no confusion there !! But what this is about, is comparing signal strength, as to having 3G either toggled on or off. See when i first got my iphone 3g, im gonna flat out say it !!! My signal SUCKEDDDD ! im mean really bad, i never went out of serivce (thankfully) but i never had more than 2 bars where ever i was. At home (where i currently get between 1-2 bars avg) i was messing around with some settings on my iphone 3g, for some reason i felt like turning off 3g data usage, just to see how slow edge really was in comparison , in the process i swear to you, i immediately got 5 BARSS!! and now every where i go with 3g off, 5 BARS !! some 1 plz explain this to me if it can be explained ? Thanx in Advance !

Yeah, on my 3g, i get 0-3 bars in the places I had full bars on my Edge iPhone. Sometimes it jumps to full strength, but its always low... But i can get 0 bars and still have internet..weird

He's right - it's just that simple. It's like In 'n Out versus McDonalds...the first blows the second out of the water in terms of quality. But the latter is available in exponentially more areas around the country.

And I'd normally argue the point that EDGE isn't literally everywhere, but I've used it in areas you'd never imagine had ANY reception - phone or data!

Theres 3g in like 95% of the USA...

Even if i get 1 or 2 bars of 3g i still get 900 kbps at least.

Its a different signal strength system versus edge. 5 bars edge=like 2 or 3 bars 3g.

see I kind of knew all this ! But I didn't think it would effect signal... Now maybe data slower faster that's understandable but why would the signal matter when choosing between 3G or EDGE... That's what I wana know maybe it's some thing I don't know about when it comes to networks ?

I like the analogy....maybe that's just because i am an in n' out employ.

3g is in only I'd say around 40% of the US not 95%

I lose 3 bars when switching from edge to 3g.

Two bars of 3G if im lucky....while im on a call and i lose the 3G signal and switches back to edge it hangs up on whoever im talking to. Does anyone else have this issue?

I live in Florida, and I've always had full bars. I had them down here and in Jacksonville as well.

I just got back from Virginia/DC/Maryland last night, and in Virginia they were lacking, but in DC and Maryland I had full bars.

I'll be in Ohio this weekend and will let you know about there

yeh im in florida right now, i nloy have 1st gen iphone but i swear there is not one place i have been that dosent have full bars. But florida is flat no mountains or hills so sigal travels farther and stronger because thers nothing to get in its way. In Ct where i live it varys because or the mountians heavy forests and such. Iv actually been able to surf the web on edge in florida and its great, wht a diffrence 2-3 bars does
