How does AirPort Extreme work?

is it just like a new modem? which means i need to buy a wi fi card for my desktop?

or i just connect it to my modem that is connected to the desktop?

Well, if you have a Mac, they have built in wireless.
They can run Ethernet cords if thats what your asking. They have Direct, and wireless Access. They work for other computers I think, but are meant for Mac.

Wrong, they do work well for other computers, and they are not meant for just mac but for all wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n devices

just get the airport express, Thats what I have, its cheaper and does the same thing as the extreme

I have a 1TB Time Capsule(Airport combined w a HD) due to my lack of HD space, works fine, recommended.

thanks for trying to help but you guys got me wrong... my question was if Airport express/extreme is a moded that replaces my current moden (cuz i dont have wi fi) or its an additional hardware for the moden i currently own?(which mean i just use a cable to plug it to my modem)

its a modem within itsself, its all you need for a wifi connection
EDIT: the aiport is a wireless router to give you a wireless signal, it is to be connected to a modem through you isp

802.11a\b\g is an IEEE standard - all devices compatible with 802.11a\b\g are also compatible with each others.

It is not the OS that matters, its the drivers.
