Well, the antenna IS on the bottom part of the phone, no? Maybe he had bad reception? HA! Yes, I know the ear piece is on the bottom, but what the hell...

TV shows aren't meant to be realistic. They're supposed to be stylistic.
And, because of the proximity sensor, the iPhone has to be held upside down in order to achieve that glow on his cheek.
I know it's stupid, but the phone screen's glow is the reason why you'll probably see a lot of shows have the iPhone upside down. It just adds another visual element.
