Get an electric and an effects pedal with a headphone socket, i had the Korg Pandora 2, which was excellent for bedroom playing. That way you don't need an amp.
Something like an Epiphone Les Paul or SG would be a good starter guitar, or even one of the many copies, Vintage or Encore brands are pretty decent these days.
The google Guitar Pro, and check out torrents for tabs.To live, you have to lie

has anyone heard anything about musicmasterpro.com? Apparently it is really helpful for learning guitar, amongst other instruments, but im still a little leary about spending 30 bucks if it is not that good

Try a BC Rich or maybe a Fender. Half stacks are very nice, but expensive.
Please hit the thanks button if I helped you out

Well im 16 and have been playing guitar since I was 9, so 7 years. What you definately want to start with is a Squire. If you prefer accoustic you might want to buy a cheap yamaha accoustic. Get a teacher and practise hard as the first year will be hard.
My guitars:
Gibson Les Paul
Fender Stratocaster
Pedals:
Boss DS-2
English Muff'n
Ibanez WH-10
Feel free to PM me with questions

Whatever you decide to get really doesn't matter - just be sure to not put it down. Sleep with it if you must - but play play play is the key.
Thats how you will learn and be good.

One Hell of a Comment...
I'm a 13 year-old rocker, and vice president of guitar club at my school. I have an Ibanez GAX, and a 40W Marshall Amp. My first guitar was a FirsAct acoustic which I got about 2 years ago, sounded pretty good for a cheap $60 guitar.
I would suggest you start with a low-medium priced guitar, nothing too expensive, but not too cheap either. Cheap ones can sometimes be hard to play for various reasons. It would be better to learn how to play on an acoustic, because the lack of distortion makes your mistakes more audible, and forces you to fix them. The best offers around are the Ibanez JumpStart packs. they come with EVERYTHING you need to start playing within 5 minutes of opening it ( By "EVERYTHING" I mean: Guitar, Amp, Tuner, Cables, Couple of DVD lessons, Picks, Instruction books, etc.).
I would recommend you start by learning scales, arpeggios, basic, or power chords (Try not to start with barre chords), and simple song riffs, like "Smoke on The Water", "Iron Man", "Crazy Train", "Stairway to Heaven", etc.
When you first start playing, your fingers will hurt from playing, especially on the thin strings. When this happens, just stop playing for an hour or two. In about a month, your left hand fingers (assuming you're right-handed) will grow these hard pads on them called "calluses". If your fingers start to bleed when learning to play, stop, and wait for them to grow back before playing again.
You will eventually get better, and faster. You'll learn how to play without any picking at all, just by tapping on the fretboard, and you'll be able to do a whole arpeggio with one sweep of your pick (known as "sweep picking", what separates intermediate guitarists from advanced).
If you managed to get through this novel of a comment, go buy a guitar, set it up, strum a chord. after you break every window in your house, blow out your eardrums, get sued by all your neighbors because of the noise, and find out the volume is too high, get your ears fixed, repair your windows, pay whatever your neighbors sued you for, turn down your volume, start playing, cut your fingers accidentally with the high "e" string, curse for the next three hours. And the beat goes on

If you want some really good advice, learn how to play on acoustic guitar instead.
