Thread: Prepaid data

    Default Prepaid data
Hello, I'm an iPhone 1 running on AT&T prepaid and do far it's been working pretty well, but I have a question: I want to activate a data pakage in my prepaid account and then use it on my iPHone. Does this work because I asked around in an AT&T store and the clerk told me it wouldn't work.

Also, Im running 3.1.3 right now, if that helps.

    Thanks in advance

at&t will tell you it won't work because iPhones aren't allowed on prepaid. However, data will work if you change the cellular data APN settings on your iPhone. The APN to use for prepaid is wap.cingular

Note: it's costly at $20/100MB and only lasts for 30days unless you renew by the end date.

Thanks for your reply, I have two more issues:

    1. How would one change ones celluar APN?

    2. So I'm obviously kind of cheap, and I realized I wasn't clear in my original post, but my intent in using data would be to purchase a pakage for a trip or the like, use it up, then only use cellular data when a pakage is in use (non-pakage data is exorbantly expensive!), so will your solution work for these conditions? And was that clear? It's late...

1). The best way would be to download the iPhone Configuration utility for your system and make a mobileconfig that puts in the correct APN. The other option is to buy/install a Cydia tweak that enables cellular data editing or allows the editing of the carrier bundles.

2). Yes, but you'd have to toggle your data settings around when needed/not needed.
There's no guarantee cellular data won't be charged to your account when changing to an invalid APN, the only way to keep from being charged is to disable cellular data in Settings or call CS and have them disable it for you. If MMS is a necessity, you might make sure you're data settings (or invalidating them) doesn't subsequently disable MMS use.
