AT&T detects tethering!
I received an email from AT&T basically saying they can now detect if you are tethering with your iPhone.
Here is the email:
Dear (my name here),
We've noticed your service plan may need updating.
Many AT&T customers use their smartphones as a broadband connection for other devices, like laptops, netbooks or other smartphones a practice commonly known as tethering. Tethering can be an efficient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of AT&T's mobile broadband network and use more than one device to stay in touch with important people and information. To take advantage of this feature, we require that in addition to a data plan, you also have a tethering plan.
Our records show that you use this capability, but are not subscribed to our tethering plan.
If you would like to continue tethering, please log into
your account online at Cell Phones and Cell Phone Plans - Wireless from AT&T, or call us
at 1-888-860-6789 Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. CST
or Saturday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. CST, by March 27, 2011
to sign up for DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering.
Here are details on the plan:
DataPro 4GB for Smartphone Tethering
$45 per month
(this gives you 4GB in total, combining both your smartphone data plan for $25 and the tethering feature, $20)
$10 per each additional GB thereafter, added automatically as needed
Mobile Hotspot capabilities are included for compatible Smartphones
If we don't hear from you, we'll plan to automatically enroll you into DataPro 4GB after March 27, 2011. The new plan whether you sign up on your own or we automatically enroll you will replace your current smartphone data plan, including if you are on an unlimited data plan.
If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.
It's easy to track your usage throughout the month so there are no bill surprises. For example, we send you free text messages when you reach 65, 90, and 100 percent of your plan's threshold. If you would like to monitor your account more closely, go to Wi-Fi Data & Tethering Data Plan - Wireless from AT&T to learn about other ways to track your data usage.
As a reminder, our smartphone data plans also include unlimited usage of Wi-Fi at no additional charge. AT&T smartphone customers can use Wi-Fi at home or on-the-go at any one of our more than 23,000 U.S. hotspots already included in your data plan.
Thank you for bringing your account up to date. We appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve your mobile broadband needs.
I called them soon after receiving this and was basically notified of their new system that can detect if your iPhone is tethering.
What you guy make of this?
Anyone else got it also?
My favorite (Paid) MyWi app now rendered useless...Hit the thanks button if I helped in any way

Yeah go online and look at your data usage. It's possible if you're a heavy tether user you got red flagged.

Yeah if you pulling example more than 5 gigs they might be dinging you because of that.

20-30 GB =( and for those who say that's excessive. Netflix uses a ton of data and i have nothing to do at work And work is the only place i use all my data =/ I know im red flagged but can they legally just change my data plan just like that by themselves? How does apple find out that someone is tethering?
03-17-2011, 04:21 PM #7
Yeah thats why you got busted. And yes they can change it because they are thinking that your using it for "not good" reasons. I cant remember exactly what they call it but its in the laws.
03-17-2011, 04:24 PM #8
I use that much and they didnt flag me

Been waiting my turn since I could first tether on an idevice

Would having a different apn profile block this. I had to install one way back before I was using mywi. So I'm hoping this blocks AT&T ability to detect mine cause I use just about 5gb a month. Also would having the unlimted plan keep me from getting these messages

I spoke with what the first lady I talked to said is a "special department" lol. Guy I spoke with basically said that they have a new system in placevthat can detect whe the phone us pulling data and when it's pulling as a wifi hot spot. I asked him how's that possible and he said he can't say, top secret lol
Is it possible tho? I only tethered small stuff like eBay or google research but most of my pull is from Netflix. I told him according to AT&T's data usage chart I'm right in the ball park.
My plan now is to let my Netflix run a ton, but no tether what so ever than if they still complain I'm gonna call their bluff, if it is a bluff :/

That's odd. Funny in a way.
I believe they assume you're tethering bc it is likely impossible to use over 20GB on your phone alone. So they're assuming but in no way do they really know you're tethering.
I don't tether often and I stay under 5GB a month. They might just be targeting those using over 10 or 15GB bc honestly even if I tried my hardest on my iPhone alone, I can't get past 5GB. I watch a lot of YouTube too and stream music from Pandora.

Try Netflix lol
1 movie = 300mb +/- 50mb
I racked up lots of data that wayHit the thanks button if I helped in any way

I use my iPhone 4 as a laptop, camcorder, and iPod and it gets lots of data usage. I average 20 GB a month without tethering.

Haha I don't use NetFlix. Now my question is, is it possible to run up that much data with NetFlix on an iPhone? If so, does the phone load it quick enough for you to view or must you tether to have adequate loading time?
Hope they don't accuse you of tethering then!
