Apple TV subtitles questions

I am considering buying Apple TV because I would like to jailbreak it to receive free tv shows from local networks (I'm in the US, by the way) and I watch them in closed captions. I use netflix often and know the cc's are available directly from their website. I also rip movies from my dvd collection and embed cc's onto them for display on my iPad. My question is, is Apple TV able to display cc/subtitles (even though it has a feature that enables them, but I'm hearing otherwise) if I view network shows and the like? This is the biggest factor in my purchase, otherwise it's totally useless to me.

Yes, I have an ATV3 and use subtitles all the time.

Does this require jailbreaking, or can you use it with the "normal" one. If so, how?
