I really want to get an ATV2 but mkv streaming is a must. I need to stream mkv files over wifi (wireless N) from either my Mac mini or hdd connected to my Airport Extreme. This device will hook into a monitor via HDMI. I know ATV2 is jailbroken but are there any solutions for those with mkv files. Any devices other than ATV2 you would recommend for my situation?

It's jailbroken but no installer or anything yet... still very new.
Xbox360 or PS3 would work pretty well. I use windows media center to stream to my xboxes. There is a way to get MKV to work in media center. I picked up the ATV for fun, as the xboxes will remain as my primary media center.

Trust me when I say that everyone is waiting for the capability to stream media files other than solely mp4 from iTunes. NitoTV is working hard to make this happen as he did in the first gen Apple TV.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

So next question is MKV from Mac to Xbox without installing windows. Possible?
Short answer. Nope...

If it's the new mac mini then just hook it up directly to the tv.

Yeah I'm doing that for now it's just a pain moving back and forth.

Look for an update to NitoTV in the next few weeks

Will the new Plex app solve my issue?

Yes. Just did it last night and worked fine.

Anybody tried with a 1080p file? I know ATV only displays 720p but I was wondering if an existing 1080p mkv would play without issue.

People are reporting 1080p issues. I got one I can try tonight, well tomorrow morning when I get out of work if I remember.

It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i tested 1080p mkv of blue planet running off ext hdd running through airport extreme, which is has a wired connection to the ATV
works fine, although im no expert on the image quality with the transcoding - looks great to me!
the wired connection DID make a difference for me, tried initially with wifi, but kept stuttering.
hope that helps

Helped a lot... My setup is going to be wired external hdd to Mac mini and that streamed wirelessly to the ATV via Airport Extreme... 1080p works over wireless for me now but I guess we will see.
