Buy the app. That's it.
I wanted to add yes you need data. Also consider the mapquest app. It's tons cheaper and it does turn by turn too.

You won't need data for the app to run I believe. Just a GPS signal. The maps I do believe are preloaded and don't draw from data. I am not 100% sure but I really think so cuz there were times when I would run it and didn't have my APN entered correctly and it still worked. Wasn't until I tried to Google something before I realized my data wasn't working cuz my APN was entered wrong. So I concluded I only needed a GPS signal and no data. I could be wrong?
Like someone else suggested tho, Mapquest is free and has turn-by-turn navigation. That's what I use now, I didn't like Tom Tom. Wish I had gotten Navigon instead, but I like Mapquest. Saved me from spending another $70 or however much Navigon is nowadays :/

yeah but I thought mapquest was only free turn by turn for 30 days, then either monthly $3.99 tri-monthly $9.99, or yearly $29.00.

Lolz, I just remember reading something about them, I use Navigon, by far the best Nav app there is, it's works as well as the nav that is factory installed in my Cadillac.

Unfortunately, I'm no big baller like you B for poor people like me I like Mapquest ahaha. In my standard little Mazda 3 and AUX cable
Plus Navigon/Tom Tom takes up so much darn space and I only have a 16GB 4

On an 8GB I had Tom Tom. It wasn't lagging my phone, the sync to and from iTunes for fw updates was the big pain in the butt lol

New, updated maps
Because on average 15% of roads change every year, your TomTom app comes with the latest and most up-to-date map, ready to navigate. No mobile signal or data plan is required to browse your map and navigate to your destination.

The phone already has abIlity to pick up GPS signal
It's like buying an actual GPS system. You buy it once, and use it as much as you'd like.
