It does NOT run in the background. If you tell it to, it'll keep you online on the server side even when the app is closed, so that when you open it up again, all the messages you missed will be there.

Seems still some peopel are confused about certain aspects of this app, so here I go again:
Does it run in the background? NO! The app is taken the proper approach on this issue. Instead of running in the background on your phone, the app keeps you online in their servers for X period of times. This X period of time is up to you (change in phone settings, under additional applications) and can be up to 24 hours. So as long as you check the phone once a day, to everyone else you will always be online and you will never miss a message.
Does it do notifications? NOT YET! Apple has not released the push notification firmware so no official 3rd-party app can no notifications yet. Beejive however has a workaround this at the time being. If you have MobileMe or any Exchange e-mail account with push, you can have it forward you a notification to that so you will know when you get a message. Again, this is a workaround at best and it does require you to have a push-enabled e-mail account.
My suggestion is just to either keep the app open while you're charging the phone or just check it every once in a while to see if you have anything new. Again, since you can leave the connection on their servers alive for up to 24 hours at a time, to everyone else you will always be online. Until Apple releases the push notification firmware update (hopefully in early October), this app will only be 99% perfect, but let me be clear, it still BLOWS away every other IM app out there.

iPhone Backgrounder Hack Allows Users to Run iPhone Apps in the Background - iPhone Hacks
see that for back ground apps. It's a brand new program which has some bugs. but so far it works REALLY good. this is a huge win for jailbroken iphones. it literally made me pull my iphone off of ebay and craigs list. i will still use the iphone for a while b/c of the above program.
The settings for beejive haven't loaded in my settings. has anybody else experienced this? I can't find any way to change the settings on the iphone.Last edited by alaiwy; 10-03-2008 at 10:36 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

Is this worth the 15 bucks? When push notification comes around will everyone here still consider this app worth it? (I'm asking because I'm really considering purchasing it but it's the most expensive app I've thought about buying).

i've got numerous other posts here at mmi and at howard forums and other places where people are experiencing the same thing as me: t-zones + beejive native app = FAIL with spinning icon waiting to reconnect everytime i open it. THIS APP IS AMAZING!! HOW DID YOU GET IT TO WORK WITH T-ZONES!!! YES I"M YELLING! I FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT THIS SUBJECT. lol. please do share.

EDIT:
ZOMG!!!!!!!!1111
so i've been trying to get this to work with t-zones and only just learned about this "epc.tmobile.com" APN and i don't quite understand it, but now my Beejive is working!!!! is this because i'm now getting normal un-proxied internet for free, and when this dies i'll be back to square one with wap.voicestream.com????
