I think this violates some of the developer terms just like apps running in the background

To the original poster, don't jump to the conclusion the developer is lazy or doesn't want to. Sometimes, and in this case, they legally can't (unless Apple changes its mind).

maybe steve needs to wake up

apple wants it their way not yours

its not a matter of apple being stupid or anything its just that allowing access to the core files ie the springboard can open them up to some major security problems. So you will never see a smb or customize like app on the store unless it 100% controled by apple.

It isn't technically possible.
The stock phone does not allow writing to the system partition. Nothing can be changed there.Starlight Computer Wizardry

I heard he already talked to Apple and they said no. Right now he is porting it to 2.0 so it will probably be one of the 1st apps ready for the 2.0 jailbreak...

Thespicychicken is porting it to 2.0, calm down. But you must jailbreak your phone to have it.

Posted by Spicy Chicken on July 24, 2008
I have been working hard on Customize for 2.0 and am happy to report that I have it launching now! There are just a lot of little things here and there that need to be updated in the code, and it takes a bit of time to find them all.
I'm hoping to have it up in the next few days! Stay tuned.

Springroll is a option until everything else gets ported.

Yeah, but it's not ideal, nobody really wants a command-line app...:/
