Movies.app
Price: Free
Developer: Jeffrey Grossman
Details: Movies.app allows you to find show times, buy tickets, watch trailers, get maps to your local theatres, and much more. It can show you the popular movies of the week, and upcoming ones to get excited about.

Well its free, so I gave it a shot, and i am impressed. It was extremely fast over wi-fi. Edge was slower of course but still managable. All the features work great but I have not tried to purchase tickets through the program.
There is a known bug for this app according to the author who will fix it on the next update. Apparently sometimes when you put your zipcode in, the keyboard does not hide itself. It hasnt happened to me yet though.

I also like this app., and find it very useful!
Just the one thing is, when I put my zip code in, one of my local theaters I go to on a normal basis, does not show up. ):- Brian

Hey everyone,
I'm Jeff Grossman, the developer of Movies.app. First off, I'm glad that you all like it so much. I have put a lot of time into it. Second, about the keypad not hiding, if you flick on the background part of the screen (the pinstripes), the keyboard will hide. I guess that's not as intuitive as I thought. I will be adding a "Done" button to temporary replace the "Donate" button when the keypad is open to make it less confusing.
Also, I will be adding location based services in the next version as well.
Stay tuned, and let me know if you have any other feature requests!

Hey, love the app. Very clean and efficient. A couple of suggestions:
- Favorites: Maybe keep track of which theathers you actually go to and flag them as favorite, making them the default selection when looking up times. And then tie this to:
- Linking from Box Office: The box office page is awesome with the posters and descriptions... but that's all it does. What I would love is to check the movies that are out and when I see one I like I could click on it and it would take me to my favorite theater and give me the info/times.
Aside from that I think the app is perfect. The real icing would be to actually have an account with either movietickets.com (link when purchasing tickets) and buying tickets THROUGH the app, but that's not needed since I generally just buy at the theater itself.

I was going to be working on the location based stuff now (and I got a decent amount done)...but then I realized that I went over my Google AppEngine quota (I'm using AppEngine to help with the backend).
So I am currently in the the process of implementing an emergency caching system, so hopefully I won't keep going over my quota.

That little icon is what you guys want. There are a couple of things that I want to fix before I release it, but hopefully it will be uploaded (and approved by Apple) by early to mid next week (I don't know if they will be working to approve apps this weekend).
Probably not for a couple versions
This is something that I wanted to do, but the problem is that I get the data for the Lookup and the data for the Box Office from different sources, so it's hard to link them. But it's something that I've thought about.
Not going to happen unless MovieTickets.com wants it to happen.Last edited by Jeffrey903; 07-10-2008 at 10:50 PM.

how about adding some reviews like the "box office" app has?
also, i agree that in the box office section, it'd be great if the movies were clickable to bring up the movie information page that you can access elsewhere.
looking forward to the location based services! nice work!21.5" iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 l 15" MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 l 17" PowerBook 1.67 GHz

I can't get the lookup to work, it keeps giving me weird stuff like traceback blah blah blah and i tried several zip codes and i have to exit out and come back before the keyboard will go away.

I've been having some issues in the backend, so I've been trying to work on them. Now at least it should fail with some readable errors. I've been working on the system, and I think it will be up and running tomorrow (I need it to be on a "cool down" period now since I'm using Google App Engine which has daily quotas).
As for the keypad not hiding, all you have to do is flick the screen (where the pinstripes are), and it will go away. However, since many people did not figure that out, I have also added a "Done" button that will appear when the keypad is open, but that will be in the next version which is not out yet (I'm just waiting for Apple to approve it).

Thanks for keeping us updated Jeffrey, I couldn't get the keyboard to go away no matter what I tried( I did try flicking the background). Either way, I'm looking forward to the update, this app looks very promising.

Here are two more screenshots:

Some things to notice:
1) There is a "Done" button to close the keypad
2) There is a "locate me" feature which will determine your zip code from your current location
3) The movie listing screen has been completely redesigned, with the more important information at the top
4) All of the movie show times can be seen at a glance, without having to click on a button to see more
