Default Can I Use My GPS App Without My Sim Card In?
Does anyone know if the GPS in the iPhone 4 will still work without a sim card installed? We're going out of the Country next year and I want to use Navigon while we're there. I usually take out my sim card so I don't accidentally incur any massive data fees. It worked back with my original iPhone years ago but someone told me it no longer works without a sim card on the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Must have data for GPS to work, so you will have have a sim card.

Data isn't required for GPS apps like TomTom or Navigon. All the maps are preinstalled. And there isn't any point to removing your SIM in the first place. You can disable data roaming, thus preventing you from accessing data when off your home network.
Until the next time… And if I help you out, give me a "Thanks!" Thanks!

Are you serious? According to what AT&T told me over the phone my Navigon app won't work with data turned off or the sim removed.
Have you tried disabling data roaming in a different country and had a GPS app still function? That would be great if all I had to do was turn off data roaming.

By the way, sorry this somehow got posted in the wrong section. I'm not sure how that happened. Probably too many beers. :-O

I live in Canada and have used my phone in the USA with both Navigon and TomTom. I prefer TomTom now. I leave my SIM in and just have data roaming disabled. You just have to be careful to not answer the phone or send an SMS… I go from hotspot to hotspot! And obviously, the features requiring Google searching and the like don't work, unless on Wifi. I forget with Navigon, but TomTom has shops, gas stations, restaurants and lots of stuff like that as part of the offline maps.
Until the next time… And if I help you out, give me a "Thanks!" Thanks!

We're not talking about the apple Maps app. I routinely use TomTom without an active data connection. There may be a carrier limitation as I have a Rogers iPhone, but I seriously doubt it. I've roamed in the USA with an iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4.

Thumbs up 100% the answer is yes
I am from Canada and guarantee that you can. I use Tom Tom on my 4s and always take the sim out when I cross the border into the USA. I don't want my phone ringing, nor any texts nor email. I want zero chance of data. I run my Tom Tom app for days at a time, throughout USA and Hawaii. I stop at Starbucks or McDonald's, or any place with a hotspot to check email and make calls with my Skype app. I do not put my sim back into my iPhone until I have returned to Canada. One of the reasons I use iPhone. It works fine. I always say to my wife, "I'm headed over the border and going dark!". She knows she cannot call because my sim is pulled.

Pull your sim out and never worry about roaming charges. You never know what apps are running and pulling down data. Can't do that with a blackberry, neither can you get email either if you pull your sim on a blackberry.
