Review:
Hey everyone, I was assigned in my college marketing class to construct a blog and surveys for anything that interested me. And recently I came across Novothink's Surge hybrid solar charger (here). My marketing team and I (our blog here) came across this product first at CES 2010 in Las Vegas. We really liked the idea of the charger but we questioned if it really lives up to its claims. Well fortunately for us, we were able to obtain a few samples to test.
First, visually the Surge is very appealing to the eye. It is very sleek and the metallic colors are great.
Available colors for the Surge are Black, White, Metallic Silver, Metallic Black, Metallic Blue, Metallic Copper and Metallic Green.
Another thing I noticed was that my iPhone 3GS fit PERFECTLY into this case. My iPhone was not budging or moving loosely around at all; seemed very secure. The Surge itself is not bulky with a height of less than 5 inches and less than 1 inch thick. What really set this product aside from others like Solio is that this is specifically made for the iPhone 3G/S and iPod Touch and is Apple Certified.
Another great aspect of the Surge are all the features it holds. The General Specs for the Surge (iPhone):
Solar Panel
* State-of-the-art solar panel allows continuous charging from the sun
* Custom designed and engineered solar panels outputs 5.5V at 100 mAh in full sun
* 2 hours of direct solar exposure provides about 30 minutes of talk time on a 3G network or 60 minutes of talk time on a 2G network
Battery
* Integrated rechargeable 1320 mAh 3.7 V lithium-ion polymer battery offers 105% capacity of iPhone 3G
* Advanced lithium-ion polymer battery cell technology prevents overcharging
USB
* Custom engineered USB 2.0 cable provides high capacity charging and data exchange
* Powerup and sync with iTunes without removing iPhone 3G or 3G S from case with the provided USB cable
* Compatible with standard USB charging ports
General
* Optimized power management system provides continuous charge to iPhone 3G’s or 3G S’s internal battery
* Durable, lightweight hard-shell construction with soft-touch grip side sections
* Integrated 4 LED battery status indicator
* Built-in Apple certified 30 pin connector
* Compatibility: iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S
* Model No: NT01
One of the Surge's features are the 4 LED lights on the back of the case that indicate the current battery level. I bet you're wondering how long the Surge has to be in the sun for, well Novothink has thought ahead and even developed an app in the Appstore (Solar Planner App) which can calculate an estimate of how long you need to charge the case in the sun depending on your planned usage; a very neat tool. Also, there is a built in heat-sensing feature that will auto shut off the Surge if it reaches a certain high temperature to prevent any damage. Another amazing feature I found was that this is a "hybrid" charger meaning that if there is no sun present for whatever reason you could always resort to the standard USB wall charger. This was an excellent idea that Novothink implemented in this product to make it more diverse and practical. All in all, this was just a short review of Novothink's Surge hybrid solar charger for iPhone 3G/S and iPod Touch.
