IPhone Apple AV composite cable Review
System: Iphone 3G
Firmware: 2.1 jailbreaked
Purpose: Testing TV-Out function
Tested: iphone video MP4 with resolution 640*480, photo album and ipod music player
I bought the AV composite cable from Apple for 3G iphone.
I don't have HD TV, so I use composite Cable.
Insert all video (yellow) and audio (red and white) connectors into their appropriate port on your TV receiver.
Plug the USB connector into USB power adaptor to keep it charged
Plug the dock connector into Iphone 3G
Go to Video 2 mode on your TV (depends on what TV you have), and then go to Ipod, select your movie and you can start watching ipod video on your TV.
Results:
I use resolution of 640*480 video, works great. The video quality is NOT perfect but it is pretty good. Wide screen video will have a slight cut off on right and left side. (Turn off wide screen mode if possible)
Photo album can be played as slide show + music playing in the background (man, TV-Out is so fun)
Overall, this is a pretty good product even its very expensive for a cable. (Just blame Steve Jobs for implementing a chip to locked users to use Apple brand expensive cable)
Also, I heard that no 3rd party CABLE will work with Iphone 3G firmware 2.1 or 2.2. Post one that work if you find one.
Thank you for reading

most of the ones on ebay do not work with 2.1 or 2.2 but if you look long enough you'll find some that say "compatible with iphone 3g 2.1 and 2.2" those obviously, will work.

You could certainly check feedback as a good measure.
I just bought this one

Not with that cable. There's a chip in the Apple branded cable.

Ehh on second thought, just buy the apple cable or don't purchase one at all. The one I purchased was supposed to work with firmware 2.2, it does not.
Good luck on paying apple to not use apple tv, I won't be buying one.

The listing specified that it worked on 2.2, and it does.

Ok the results are in.
Cable arrived, Vid out works just as described. now If I could just get it to work even while in
normal mode. It would be even cooler if I could view my Iphone on my Cars vid screen this way I can see who's calling, or my play list or google maps etc... any ideas?

I have a similar request. I only want the audio and usb charge cables. My goal is to only need one single cable to plug into my iphone when I get into my car. If I buy one of these AV cables will it disable the iphone screen while plugged in?
more details:
I have a 2008 BMW 335i that supports the iphone. Two problems though. 1) when you plug into the BMW cable, the iphone screen is disabled and you can only control it through the Car's idrive screen. (which isnt great, and also doesnt allow me to play non itunes stuff) and 2) the bmw cable is only like 12 inches long. I want to use my custom iphone holder I have between the vents. I want one single cable with a 30 pin connection on one side and usb + mini jack (or RCA cables I can convert to mini jack) on the other end.
Is it possible to find something that works?
even more details:
I had an idea to use a normal USB extention cable, and normal mini jack connection. I then split the USB cable open and cut the data wires. (leaving USB 5 volt power only) This kind of works, but for some reason the iphone wont charge, even though it shows a charge signal! (so I've given up this method)
Anyone, anyone?
