I can't imagine using a screen protector on the iPhone, especially since they just upgraded to optic glass for the screen. I'd be worried about compromising the touchscreen.
A hard plastic case should do the trick.

Ya'll I just got a silicone skin for my upcoming iPhone and it is sweet...low profile, not bulky and it come with a screen protector. I actually read that there may be more advantages to the silicone case than other cases for the iphone. Check out http://www.squidoo.com/iphonesiliconecase

I heard that screen protector will not work on the iPhone. I noted that if the screen is just a little damp it becomes very unresponsive.

Screen protectors work fine on iPhone, didn't anyone see how well it worked with the plastic wraper on it originally?

Stock Screen Cover + Silicone Case
Hey Jedix, I'm using a combo of a black silicone case (Jam Jacket by DLO) and the original screen protector on the iPhone. I carefully trimmed off the extra material at the bottom and the iPhone screen is still fully covered. It works fine, had it like this since I got the phone on Friday. It's already been out in the humidity and the touch screen is still super-responsive. I've had it in my pockets and no scratches yet. Best of all, that means nothing has ever touched the screen directly since it was packaged. Eventually I'll just replace it with an aftermarket one.
I had no intention of buying any accessories at the AT&T store on launch day because they were $30 each and choices were limited, but once I saw the silicone case I thought it was definitely better than a naked iPhone. I simply asked for a break and my salesman knocked it down to $20.
Looks cool in black, is grippy with a fairly low profile and has excellent "headphone management" feature built into the back for easy storage and protection of headphone wire and earbuds. This makes it bulkier (depth-wise), but worth it for the headphone storage.

Nice. I had looked at that one as well - so the added bulk doesn't annoy you? I wanted to keep my iPhone as slim as possible is why I skipped that case, I was thinking about getting the InCase rubber jacket...

Hey PF, that InCase is pretty nice, too.
The DLO is very similar to the InCase with the same basic look and features (slim, simple & durable). The extra bulk is about 1/2" in depth only, which even when looking at it didn't seem like it would fit comfortably in my pocket (I'm used to a Samsung a990 w/out any case). But I couldn't feel any extra bulk or weight in my pocket, even with tight jeans. The extra piece on the back is also silicone and flexible, so it isn't bad. I keep the screen side against my leg when in my pocket and don't notice any added bulk on the back.
So the question is whether or not you'll usually have your headphones w/you in your pocket, because if so will you constantly be dealing with untangling them (like I did on my shuffle). If you keep them separate or always have them out, it's not big deal and no real advantage to the DLO. Only other difference I can see is the grips & design on the InCase. The DLO has no grooves/design on it but it does have those raised bumps grips on the sides which I do like, and the wires and earbuds tuck into place nicely and are protected.
No matter what case you use, the iPhone is and will feel significantly wider (& longer) in your pocket than most other phones.
Good luck, let me know which case you get. I'm also looking out for a screen protector down the road...

I'm thinking i'll buy a bodygaurd case, try it out, if it doesnt decrease functionality then woohoo extra protection for the $600 device. If it does then I can always take it off
