Mod'ed base now charges 3G iPhone
Found a Griffin PowerJolt iPhone charger at BestBuy, and immediately took it apart

Mated it to an iPhone dock, an after-market that I used with Gen I.
Tricky soldering here. Used some epoxy to hold the wires

Mated that back to my generic iPod holder in the Boxster, and wired it all, works well now.

Charging and playing though Boxster head unit.

Would it be difficult for me to mod the cable from my Alpine head unit to charge the 3G?

If anyone finds a solution for Kenwood KCA-iP500 , send me a pm. Plays music fine, but won't charge.

Do you have any instructions i could possibly follow to do this?
It's only impossible if you quit.

pinouts
I would guess it will be a bit of a pain, as the ipod side of the connector is now gonna need 5v usb power:
