AirTunes Remote

I realize there are programs such as signal that you can run on your Mac to facilitate communication between your Mac and iPhone, but iTunes has functionality built in to it for remote controls plugged into the USB port on the AirPort Express. Does anyone know if it would be possible to write an iPhone app that uses this functionality to act as a remote for iTunes over WiFi?
