I just got Veency running with my iphone and it got me thinking, this is great in case it gets stolen, I reccomend getting veency ghost (google it).
As great as it is, it has some drawbacks if you want to use it for retrieval. If you don't know what it is, basically you can control your iphone remotly from your pc. BUT whatever you do on the pc is mirrored on the phone. So this potential thief would realize what's happening and turn off the phone and wipe it ASAP. We want to catch this ************.
So what I'd imagine as being an awesome security app would be using veency as a base, but adding the option of masking this remote control pc use with some kind of screen, perhaps LOADING with a little spinny thing, so the thief wouldn't be able to see what's happening behind the scenes (that's when you'd run gps or maps app, and anything else you wish). Also disabling all buttons and touchscreen, and also turning off whatever mechanism allows the iphone to be docked by usb cable (in case thief gets pissed off and decides to wipe the phone mid 'load'). Or simply turning off the screen and disabling all input and buttons, making the thief think the battery died, but even if he tried to connect it to a computer, it just wouldn't do anything.
What would also be great is a similar screen that says something like LOCKED, and in order to 'unlock' it, the thief must type in the phone's IMEI (a message on-screen tells him told that it is located on the rear-panel of the phone), at which point the camera is enabled and takes a series of pictures/videos of the culprit's face. THAT is truly what helps in retrieving a phone.
As good as GPS info is, face it, you'll have a hard time finding the ************ in a general area.
So let's say our jolly thief types in the full 15 digit IMEI. Then BAM, sorry typo, please type again. Then you can always ask for the serial number, even the FCC ID, and never really let him unlock the phone, just keep his face exposed to the camera as much as possible.
I realize that in order to make Veency work, you need to know the ip address that the phone is connected to. So perhaps using something like the prey method (preyproject.com, you log in on a different computer when yours is stolen and turn on the capture software hidden in the background) and merging it with the above siht, now THAT would be fukcing awesome!
BTW, check out prey if you have a laptop, I'm pretty happy with it since they have the webcam capture feature
Hope someone comes out with something like that for iphone.
I'd hate to be the person who would steal your phone, lol. They don't know wht is comin 4 them :X
PS: How do you like my sig and avatar? This is my first post with them, please comment. I definitely need to resize that roflcoptor. You must agree the sig is funny
