"LAN Chat" App Possible?

I’d like a LAN chat app for my iPhone.

I was recently on a cruise and the ship had a near ship-wide LAN. I had to have an internet account to get on the LAN, but as long as I did not access the net (no Safari, no email) then I did not get charged. So . . .

This got me to thinking – what if I had a “LAN Chat” app on my iPhone and my wife’s iPhone – then we could probably text or talk to each other no charge. This would be very handy for keeping up with each other (and the kids when they join us).

I know nothing about what it takes to do this – is this feasible?

Something like WiChat Bonjour IM might work. It's a Bonjour IM client for the iPhone/iPod Touch.
