Media Player
Is there any way a VLC - like media player could be made into a native app? I mean, how cool would it be to be able to play DVIX/XVID on your iPhone! No converting videos anymore...
Anyone else like the idea?
So, this cannot be done? VLC can't be ported?Last edited by gohome190; 03-15-2008 at 10:50 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

they should be able to. I think its open source and it already runs on several unix flavors. I see no obvious impediment to porting it to the iphone. Whoever can get this done will be my personal hero. This app in combination with SafariDownload will make my iphone a multimedia powerhouse!

ive was googleing on this section (about dvix and other media types. )like movie watching online . ) and they all return same answer . "apple isnt going to do it . because they want their own formats. and for safari it might never happen .

come on guys. It shoudnt be too hard to port this to iPhone. Is anyone currently working on this? It would be SO MUCH better to be able to watch any movie codec directly from the iphone without having to first convert it on my mac and resync it.

Where would one get started writing native apps for the iphone? I have a little bit of coding history, so I think I'll take a stab at it.

Somebody could probably try getting mplayer to work. I think one of the third party tools for converting videos on iPhones uses ffmpeg, which is a componant or mplayer. ...if somebody has the time, we just need to get mplayer running and then make a gui for it.

thank you gohome. I wish you luck. Keep us updated with your progress! This will be a KILLER app and quickly become one of the most popular.
mplayer port is also a good suggestion. whatever is easier.-----------------------------------------------------------

Just one small fly in the ointment....how would we get these into iTunes for syncing. The really cool app would allow you to drag and drop your media files directly into the iPhone like you can with the iPod Touch.

If this app was made you would have to transfer files through ssh, you wouldnt be able to use itunes because it doesnt surport the file

That's true, you would have to add the files like you do with roms for the NES and SNES emulators. I think it would still be wayyy worth it.
Now we need someone to... make it!
