1.1.4 is pretty ancient firmware. I'm not sure how many of the currently available Twitter apps are compatible with 1.1.4.

Not really, if you set the phone up properly it will still run great. Just stay away from mobile substrate apps like Winterboard, SBsettings..etc. Anything that runs constantly in the background.
