Is their a native app that pulls up the definitions from the web instead of just sending you to wikipedia.com?

A) wikipedia is waay to big to fit in one iphone app...(unlike britannica or encarta the amount of articles in it is freaky...)
B) the point of wikipedia is that its up to date with current events, having an app that does not connect to the internet wont be feasible...unless the app (like installer) refreshes its articles, but then you would spend the whole day refreshing every single new line that goes in...

Dumb
that's the dumbest thing I have ever heard!
There are native versions of wikipedia made for pocketpc for instance, and they work great. Admittedly they do not contain all topics but 250 mb is still a whole lot of articles, and why do you need to update? It would be awsome to have the most popular topics from wikipedia available offline!
Has anyone heard of any sort of development in this arena? Excuse my spelling...

I havent seen any apps for the iphone like this, but it is not for lack of trying! I've spent a lot of time looking at getting wikipedia in the .dict format so it will work with Wedict. No luck, but I did find a wiktionary dump that worked. Check http://modmyi.com/forums/showthread....401#post137401
Now looking to create my own, but splitting the files up to make them workable.
For non believers have a look at
http://encyclopodia.sourceforge.net/en/index.html
It can be done, we just need someone with more skills than me

confusion
let me be clear as I wasn't before, I've been searching for an offline wiki browser. I know about the online ones, I use ipodia a lot. I recently found this link http://haukap.net/
its still early in development, I will try install it this weekend and maybe write a guide if I get it right.

Ok news to all! Wikipedia does indeed exist in one file (the dump is of October 2007) BUT it's 2GB. I've tried this and it works perfectly. Here's the link: http://collison.ie/wikipedia-iphone/
It's still a bit rough but it works. There's also a dump in German.
1.)Download the app and copy it into the Applications folder (set permissions).
2.)Download the dump and place the 'wp' folder in var/root
3.)Fire it up and enjoy!Last edited by dima338; 02-08-2008 at 11:04 AM.
