Activity Monitor / Task Manager App
I think this would be a good app to see what is running and more importantly how things are running (in regards to how much CPU it is taking) and how it apps are affecting battery life.
ANy thoughts?

I second that request. I'd really like to find out if apps are still running in the background after i press the "home" button. Is it possible to run out of resources?

Actually most applications shut themselves down eventually.
Programs like mail keep running while they are downloading new mail, then exit.
