him121213 is right. Winterboard has improved drastically and only uses ~1Mb.
Definitely the best choice for customizing.

The homescreen slider will be bottombarknobgray.png

While your there, if you want to change the other sliders they will be:

    bottombarknobgreen.png is the call slider
bottombarknobred.png is the turn off phone slider

EDIT: for carrier goto: /System/Library/Carrier Bundles/ATT_US.bundle/

Here you will see the two att images:

    Default_CARRIER_ATT.png
    FSO_CARRIER_ATT.png
I did this but it did not change? What went wrong any idea?

Did you make sure they were named properly and the proper image size?

When you dropped the images in their folders was there a message of files being overwritten or did the files just drop into the folders?

    Default Slider Text

Go to google and look for an app called Iutilities. Thats what i use to change my slider text. You will need to know the IP address for your phone, cause it will ask for it as a login when you run the program. And the password is alpine. Once it logs into your phone it has a pretty good GUI. Click on the tab that says strings, and in the top right corner you will be able to change your slider text.
