Last-app snapback on home double-click

Is there a way to keep a record of the last program opened so that when I double-click the home button it would go straight back to that?

For instance, say I'm writing in Notes and the music is getting distracting. I'd click home, select the icon to get into the iPod, stop the music, then just double-click home to go back to my note.

Even cooler: it could keep a cache of the three last used programs in memory, and if you double-clicked home while pressing the screen at the same time, it would pop up a bezel showing these program's icons -- move your finger over the icon and lift up to return to that program.
