Universal T.V remote using iphone

Dont know if this has been discussed yet, but i think it be a great idea to be able to use the iphone for a tv remote, like the universal ones they sell that works on all tvs

How would the iPhone communicate with your tv? It doesn't do IR/RF, and most tvs don't have bluetooth or wifi, do they?

The problem is it couldnt work as a "stand alone" remote for something like a TV....because those signals use infra-red, which the iphone isnt capable of.

I know there are a couple apps out already to control things like entertainment systems, but runs on wifi I think.

Most of the new high-end equipment Does come with bluetooth compatibility, especially the home theater stuff. It's so you can play your mp3's from your phone through them without the $100.00 adapter. My a1200 ming works with a motorola adapter thru my sony theater.

There isn't an app to do this. But I think in another thread someone posted that a group of students at a university had made an app plus a small device that plugged into the headphone jack that made this possible.
