why cant we overclock?
i have done no research....so maybe this has been answered...but why cant the phones chip be overclocked...the new touch is running faster so you would think there is a way to find out how and (at the expense of battery life) make the phone fast fast fast

well no need to overclock - if we can just get it to run at the 620MHz speed it is capable of. Apple underclocked it to 402MHz.
There must be a hack though...

I can definitely understand why Apple underclocked it on 1.X due to the fact that there were no official 3rd party apps out there. But now that 2.X is out and people look at it as a fairly serious gaming device WHY THE HELL would they leave it underclocked when they could take it up to its full capable speed and if not full speed at least around 530 MHz instead of the pitiful 402 MHz its clocked at.

Probably because of the battery life.

They could also offer it as a paid-plugin later on... Yknow how Apple works..

I would also like to see this. A lot of apps run down right pitiful on the phone.
As it is, if you're using your phone to play games/stream audio, you're going to have next to no battery life anyway

I think that someone out there could find a way to do it. I definately would try it if so.

402 mhz is probably the sweet spot for battery life/performance combination AND has been tested to all hell... they don;t want to deal with phones overheating and people crying about lowered battery life at this point so they will keep it like it is... I for one notice no lagginess whatsoever now that I used quickpwn instead of the other methods that seem to slow a JB phone down.

I once prayed to God for an iPhone, but quickly found out He didn't work that way...so I stole an iPhone and prayed for His forgiveness.

It probably could be done, But the riskiness factor of the process, And not to mention void warranties if something went wrong..

lol. Everything we do here technically voids warranty.

Love me some overclocking....
I for one would love to see this functionality on the iPhone. In the pocket PC world, there are several applications that allow this function and also to set application specific overclocking rates for the time that those apps are run and leave the default CPU speeds for the usual running of the phone, still preserving battery power! These apps usually also have modules that test for safe speeds that won't damage your phone.
Come on devs, help us out here. I'd be happy to donate to this cause or even pay for such an app.
As for Apple providing this feature.... forget it friends, it'll never happen from them. They won't want to offer support for something like this. No manufacturer would.
The other thing to consider is how this would impact the GPU in our iPhones. Are they up to the job or are they in fact capable of much more speed too?
This could really be interesting. Just thinking, if battery life is a concern for many, a feature could be implemented that only allows for the increased clock rates when mains power is detected! There are so many possibilities, if it is at all possible, but I honestly can't think of a reason why it shouldn't be. The Dell Axim 50v can be happily overclocked in excess of 700Mhz and that too has a seperate GPU.
Well here's hoping a capable developer reads our posts andseriouly looks into the possibilities.
If this can be done, maybe more of the Open GL extensions can be put to better use to give us even better graphics too.
