I used to feel the same way coming from windows mobile. Now that I see how stable the iphone is, I think I'd rather things not run in the background. I'd rather my phone stay extra zippy fast/stable.

Apple is coming out with a notifaction service though to allow programs to be notified of new IM's/messages/alerts etc.
